I'm an early baby-boomer ex-hippie who's been living and teaching in Japan for about 20 years. I've travelled a bit (47 US states and about 30 countries on 3 continents) and lived lots of different places. I enjoy teaching and Yahoo! Answers is for me a kind of extension of that. My jobs keep me pretty busy, writing lesson plans, grading homework, & making tests... so I don't have a lot of time for hobbies these days, but I love my Mac Mini and high-speed internet access.
What is the grammatical term for rhyming phonemes (ding-a-ling, willy-nilly)?
Many languages have such constructions. Japanese, for example, often doubles phonemes (waku-waku, bochi-bochi, iro-iro). Is there a different name for doubled (as opposed to rhyming) phonemes?
I'm looking for a term like "onomatopoeia."

I want to know if vocabulary acquisition varies from country to country, culture to culture. Are there standards for US school children? For example, does the Dept of Ed expect 6th graders to have a working vocabulary of 1000 words? I have looked at the US Dept of Ed and UNESCO homepages, but cannot find the info I'm looking for. Maybe I'm just not asking the right question ... Any suggestions about sources of info?
