  • Is there a way to be notified when the high street sales are on?

I always miss the sales in the high street sales. It's ok in winter, because it's always after boxing day generally, but summer sales and other sales are easy to miss. Is there some internet service that will notify you about these?

  • How do I turn into a Werewolf in Skyrim?

I've already worked out how to become a werewolf (join the companions, join the circle etc). I have the Beast form in my powers list. I just can't seem to activate it - when I select it nothing happens. I have not been able to turn into a werewolf since the first uncontrolled transformation after the blood ceremony.

Any ideas any Skyrim players out there (I know there are lots of you...).

  • How many ways are there of comparing x objects out of a total of y?

I know this is (very) basic, but it's a long time since I did this. What is the mathematical calculation that tells you how many different ways you can compare x objects from a total of y (e.g. how many ways direct 2 way comparisons I could do from a total of 4 objects)...

Vague recollections of nCr or nPr or something like that but nothing forming a definite shape in my head.

  • How are the various parts of speech in English divided?

English has several 10s of thousands of words. What I want to know is how this collection is divided up into parts of speech / lexemic categories.

E.g. What percentage of the total are nouns, what percentage are verbs, what percentage adverbs, pronouns, prepositions etc etc.

    Please quote your evidence...

    Thanks.

  • How do I stop chkdsk running each time I restart my Win XP PC?

Background: Running Windows XP service pack 2 on a 3GHz Pentium 4 PC which is about 4 1/2 years old.

I was getting a bit frustrated with the computer running slowly so I decided to run an error check and let it fix any hard drive errors, so selected Error check from the properties menu of my C: drive and told it to run an error check.

I restarted the PC as it told me to and it started chkdsk on reboot. It completes sections 1,2,3 of the chkdisk (File Verification, index verification and security descriptor verification).

However, it keeps completely hanging on verifying file data (stage 4) - first time at 42% and second time at 6% (I left it for at least 8 hours each time once it stopped moving just in case it was hanging).

If I restart it it just runs chkdsk again and hangs again. How do I stop it doing this and is then anything I can do to rescue the situation?

Thanks very much in advance (this question is being posted from a friend's PC)

  • Reconciling Quantum and Classical interpretions of nuclear magnetic resonance?

Ok. A little background - I'm a doctor. I'm trying to understand the basic principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (as the principle behind MRI) - just because I'm curious... I have some knowledge of physics to first year college level.

I'm being a bit lazy by not getting out a textbook and trying to understand this from various sites around the internet...

However, I'm having a fundamental failure of comprehension.

My (simplistic) understanding is that spin is a quantum mechanical property, i.e. discrete.

So for protons for example, it is either 1/2 or -1/2. The energy levels associated with each spin state are degenerate until a magnetic field is applied at which point one becomes higher level than the other. There is a population bias toward the lower energy state. Application of an RF radiation pulse at the Larmor frequency will shift a proportion of these protons into the higher energy state from which they eventually relax into the equilibrium state.

  • Can you get handheld computers that allow you to plug in USB keys?

I have a huge amount of very important data I carry around on my USB key.

I also will soon be doing a job where I won't be at one particular computer so I'm quite keen on getting myself a handheld (Palm / Pocket PC).

What I wasn't sure of was if it is possible to plug in a USB memory key directly into a handheld so I can read files on it through my key.

(specifically I have a lot of useful notes stored in a TiddlyWiki file on my USB key, and I want to be able to access that from a handheld on the go through the browser on the handheld).

    Any ideas / advice?

  • English-Hindi / Hindi-English Dictionary Recommendations?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good English to Hindi and Hindi to English dictionary (preferably one volume)?

There are obviously many available, but I'm looking for personal recommendations of quality.

  • Is there an easy way to edit cellphone 3GP videos?

My GSM phone encodes in video in 3GP format, which isn't recognised by Windows Movie Maker.

I just want to rotate the videos - nothing fancy: is there a simple Windows software tool that will let me do this?

If not does anyone have any recommendations for software that converts 3GP to more standard formats like mpeg3 or avi that most video editing software will recognise?

    Thanks!

  • Can I wirelessly network my laptop and my desktop if the desktop doesn't have a wireless adapter?

Essentially I have my Cable modem hooked through a wireless router which is then connected to my desktop via an ethernet cable.

I wirelessly connect to the web through my laptop.

I can't seem to figure out how to set up a home network with this system. As far as I can tell windows networking requires my desktop to have a wireless adapter as well, even though it is connected to the wireless router.

I'm sure I'm being very stupid here and that this should be a simple thing to do.

If not is there any way around the need to get a wireless card for my desktop?

(I'm running Windows XP on both machines).

    Thanks!

  • What exactly is the difference between western ice cream and Indian Kulfi?

Anyone actually make Kulfi / Ice Cream?

Please don't tell me that Kulfi is Indian Ice Cream. That doesn't answer the question and is not accurate.

Also, please don't cut and paste from Wikipedia - I've read the very short article in there. I would like to hear from people with personal knowledge.

  • How do I find out if I have been formally cautioned?

I was stopped by the police a couple of years ago when they accused me of dangerous driving (not stopping at a roundabout and not signalling before turning left).

At the time they said they were cautioning me. I didn't take this seriously (I don't remember being asked to sign anything).

How do I find out if I was actually formally cautioned? I need to declare cautions on a job application form (for which police checks will be performed) and I don't want to say yes or no without being absolutely sure first.

    Thank you.

  • Exactly why is Hillary Clinton so loved and loathed?

As a Brit I find it hard to understand the highly polarised, highly personal attitudes of a lot of Americans towards Mrs Clinton.

It strikes me as being far wider than merely the Democrat / Republican divide.

So, love her or hate her - if you've got a strong opinion about her I'd like to know WHY?

  • What's the best way to beat internet addiction?

It's the new year and resolution time again, and more specifically, it's break-your-resolution time again as well. And I already have.

I know this is a difficult question, and everyone's different blah blah blah. And I see the irony in asking how to beat internet addiction in an online forum. I just wanted any tips from people who have learnt to control the amount of time they spend on the net.

A little background and context. I'm naturally a tech geek. I'm also addicted to information and read many blogs regularly, constantly surf wikipedia, BBC news. I have god knows how many RSS feeds in my feed reader. And of course I waste even more time on Y!Answers and Y!360.

However, I can't just switch off my computer, or remove my broadband connection. I'm a PhD student and I need the connection and access to actually do my work (and I do have to do a lot of work at home).

    Ideas?

  • Does anyone know how to get rid of print-on labels on bags?

Not sure if this is really the best section to ask.

I've got a few bags that I have been given at conferences which are quite nice, but they have logos printed on (they were clearly generic bags, but the logos have been added later).

Has anyone got any idea how I might get such print-on labels off? I've tried scratching, alcohol and nail varnish remover to no effect.

    Thanks!

  • Is there a user forum for Yahoo 360?

I just really dislike the fact that they've gotten rid of "friend of a friend of a friend". It just seems a very stupid thing to do for a social-networking site?

Is there a user forum for 360 like the one for Answers where I can feed back to them about this (I commented on their blog entry, but that's not very effective).

  • Why do we celebrate Christ's mass when he's always portrayed as such a skinny guy?

Could it be that he was actually obscenely fat but his spin doctors in the church subsequently portrayed him as slim and sexy in a public relations move?
