Irish male. Interested in everything except, er, practical stuff!

  • Roughly, how many rain fronts pass over Ireland each year?

If you can find a website that seems to back this up, it would be helpful.

  • Looking for a quote on meeting unrealistic deadlines?

I'm looking for a quotation that goes something like this "You can fool someone into committing to an unrealistic deadline, but you can't bully him into meeting it". Do you know who might have said it, and what the actual quotation was?

  • When is it expected that scientists will drill into Lake Vostok in Antarctica to see if any life exists there?

I'm interested in how soon this will happen? My understanding is that a Russian team nearly did it 11 years ago, but no attempts have been made since then due to possible contamination. Does anyone know when the team expect to perform this feat, and who the team will be? Appropriate web-links or additional documentation appreciated.

  • What is the proper name for a narrow channel that is cut into the bedrock by the sea?

When walking on a rocky coastline, sometimes you find yourself impeded by straight, narrow, deep channels 1-2 metres across, that occur as a result of softer rock being eroded much faster than the surrounding rock. If you were to fall into one of these channels you might find it difficult to get out ahead of an oncoming tide! I don't think the word "channel" is the proper word, and I would like to know the correct definition for it and a web-link if possible.

  • How to model the motion of a dumbell?

Ok, you have a dumbell, two different masses - M1 and M2. The weight of the rigid support in between is inconsequential - assume it to be zero.

Also, lets assume its in two dimensions and that gravity and frictional forces do not apply.

If you give one dumbell a push, is there a way to model the movement of the two masses over time? Any mechanics people out there? How would you do it? Is there something on the web that might be a good reference?

  • How can I categorize my blogs?

I would like to organize my blog posts, so that if someone hits a hyperlink to the words on the main screen they can just see the posts that are relevant.

Say I have a blog that deals with Jelly, Cream and Mustard, and each post I make refers to one - or more - of these three items, even if they are not mentioned in the blogs explicitly. I have two issues: how do I embed an appropriate metatag in each posting I make, and secondly how do I set it up so if I hit the "Jelly" link I will only see those posting with the metatag of <jelly>?

I am using Blogger, if that makes any difference.

  • What is the best way to dispose of garden weeds?

I've heard that it's a bad idea to put weeds (nettles, heliotropes, ragwort etc.) into a compost bin, so what then? I don't want to dump them with the general trash if I can avoid it.

  • Why do hundreds of airliners all cross the Atlantic Ocean from the US at the same time each morning?

Why don't airliners just cross over at any time of the day? What is so special about flying out from the US during the evening, and arriving into to Europe during the early morning? It sounds like a traffic control nightmare. My understanding is that 200 flights make the trip, carrying over 80,000 people, in a period of 2 hours or so.
