I am the founder of U.K Parrot Care & Rescue set up in 2009 to meet the needs of parrots of all species who find themselves homeless. We re-habilitate sick & injured birds, birds with disabilities. I have lots of knowledge on husbandry, diet & training. We aim to educate potential owners about the reality of parrot ownership. We also care for Cockatoos who have significantly different needs.

  • African Grey Parrot egg could be fertile , need advice.?

I have 2 African Greys 1 FEMALE Congo & 1 Male Timneh. We believed them both to be female but their past owners were wrong. We recieved D.N.A. confirmation that we have one of both. They have been hanging out together for months & really bonded. They have seperate cages but spend their days together.I havent actually seen them mate though they easily have had enough time.

Today my female has laid an egg at the bottom of her sleep cage. I know the egg is possibly fertile but dont know what to do. She hasnt got enough nesting material just paper liner. The father is in his cage going med to get to her & she is sitting the egg. No breeding box, no preperstion due to false D.N.A.

I want to help my birds but dont know what to do, we have never bred & didnt plan too either but if the eggs are fertile I dont want to take away their chance of survival.

Will she be able to raise chicks where she is? Does she need the father with her. Please only people who have real knowledge answer.

I have contacted my vet & am waiting for a call back .

  • Why are so many bird owners on here reluctant to take their bird to see a vet?

I know that there are many responsible bird owners devote themselves to their companions. However so many people are looking for answers that can ONLY be given by a vet. I know its expensive but when did medical care for the birds become optional?
