I need a Latin motto for a theme on Solipsism?
I want a classical scholar to give me something in good classical Latin in the same form as the famous quote from Descartes:
"Cogito ergo sum. I think therefore I am"I have tried word-for--word translations, and nothing seems to fit the idea. As the saying goes, "I'll know it when I see it."It would be a translation of something like:I think, therefore you are, orHe thinks, therefore I exist (only in his mind)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism

Languages1 year agoDo regional dialects in Britain have attempts to provide separate singular and plural second person pronouns?
In the US, there are various versions of this. In the south, it's" y'all, " In New York, "youse," and in the midwest, "Youuns." A few speakers retain ye, thee thou.
Is there anything like that in the UK, Crown dependencies and Overseas territories?

4 AnswersLanguages2 years agoWhen polyglots answer the question: "How many languages do you speak?" with a number, What are the various criteria for deriving it?
I speak three languages well enough to be employed in positions requiring that language. I speak many more with varying degrees of proficiency.
I would normally say three,. but I might add a few more because I understand many things when I listen to speakers.
I can exchange pleasantries in many more, but I do not think I should count these.
2 AnswersLanguages2 years agoWhat is the effect of Judge Gloria Maria Navarro's decision dismissing (with prejudice) the government's case against Bundy and others.?
After more than 20 years of controversy and armed stand-off, much of the case was terminated by Judge Navarro, an Obama appointee. Are the Bundy's now free to graze their cattle on "federal land" without payment of fees? The decision seems narrow, but it may overturn many laws and legal concepts such as individual sovereignty. .

2 AnswersPolitics3 years agoIs there any university in the United States (other than Puerto Rico) where a student may earn a degree studying only in Spanish?
There are 40 million+ Spanish speakers in the US, but I do not know of a single university offering arts or science majors taught in the Spanish language. I am not asking abouy courses in the Spanish language itself Compare this with Canada, with 10 million French speakers and many universities offering complete offerings in French. .
2 AnswersLanguages3 years agoOn the English site, When a question is asked in a specific language (not English), is it a violation to respond in that language?
I was reported for doing this in Russian. I thought it was appropriate. In real life, when I am able, I usually respond to questions in the language in which the question was asked. I consider that polite. When I am with others who do not speak the language, I usually explain what was said.

This is a document recovered by the BStU when Germany was unified
http://www.bstu.bund.de/EN/Home/home_node.html
It is from the files of the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit of the German Democratic Republic. I am doing research on the operation described. I would be grateful for a translation into English that preserves as much as possible of the official government style. . Please also expand abbreviations if possible.
MVN stands for Military Liaison Mission.

3 AnswersMilitary4 years agoWhat do the terms, Brexit, British and Britain mean to you?
I don’t need a dictionary definition. I am familiar with the ambiguity of the terms.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britain_(place_name)
With all the writing about Brexit, the terms get thrown around loosely, I have been thinking of the usage of Britain and British for the past few days and checked The Economist style Guide for information under "British," there is guidance on how to refer to Margaret Thatcher but nothing on British/Britain.
I sometimes see the term “British” referring to passports, etc. meaning the UK plus the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. Some of these have a relationship with the EU, but do not have full membership. Perhaps one of those relationships might be expanded to include the rest of "Britain," (whatever that is) Under some relationship with the EU.
I don't think it would be necessary to move all the ministries to Sark, but it might be worth thinking about. The prohibition of automobile traffic and dark skies sounds attractive,
The Scots may already thinking somewhat along these lines, possibly with the realignment with the Irish the Isle of Man, Wales and the Channel Islands as a (formerly-) Celtic speaking entity coming under the existing Irish aegis in the EU. Perhaps even the separatists in Brittany would join.
Some of the old feudal relationships are still respected with the Queen of England acting in the Channel Islands as Duke (not Duchess) of Normandy with fealty to the absent King of France.
3 AnswersOther - Politics & Government5 years agoWhat responsibility does a person have to reveal that several other people claimed to have heard a ghost in the house?
I do not believe in ghosts and have spent many nights alone there. The people who have heard the ghost are reliable people (relatives and friends) and tell similar stories. The identity of the ghost might be a seven-year old boy who died about 1850. There was an old grave marker in the cellar with an inscription with a name and dates. No one has ever expressed a feeling of uneasiness associated with the noises. Usually it is a soft call, "Mother, Mother."
One person who heard it thought it was her own child and answered it, but her son was somewhere else.
People who have heard it wonder why I haven't heard it and ask me what I would do if I saw it at night. I say that I'd treat it like a lost small boy and try to comfort it.
In your answer, please mention where it applies . I'd also like to hear other examples of unexplained non-threatening experiences.
6 AnswersParanormal Phenomena5 years agoWhat does "bento" mean in German? Note that it is written in all lower-case letters, so it doesn't seem to be a noun.?
I read the periodical, Der Spiegel almost every day online. Recently, I have begun frequently seeing the term, "bento," I know the term as a Japanese lunchbox meal, but what does it mean in German?
It seems to be a journalistic category and Frauke Lüpke-Narberhaus is assigned to report on it for Der Spiegel. From context, I have not been able to determine it's meaning. Web searches seem only to explain the lunch box meaning. Here is the result or a search of the Der Spiegel site.
5 AnswersLanguages6 years agoThis question relates to the agreement of German personal pronouns when the gender of the noun and the sex of the referent are not aligned.?
The two sentences are given only as examples. A general answer will be appreciated. Which sentence below is correct or more usual in proper writing and speech? If there is a difference in some circumstances, please comment on the seriousness of an error.
Das Baby heißt Otto.
1) Er ist seben Monate alt.
2) Es ist seben Monate alt.
Please discus the choice of pronoun in some detail. When I ask native German speakers, most say 1) but when I consult grammar books, the answer seems to be 2).
I speak English, Russian and German. In both Russian and English, the pronoun agrees with the biological sex.
Many thanks

2 AnswersLanguages6 years agoDistinction between tense and mood in French?
In a comment relating to a question about the subjunctive mood in German,
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20140...
the following comment was posted on Yahoo! answers.
(in) French for example, the distinction between mood and tense is blurred.
My impression is that the distinction is much clearer in French than in English.
Is the general statement about being blurred true?
Thanks in advance. Merci!
