  • Statistics question- it should be easy with a spreadsheet, but I can't crack it.?

There are 2 rabbits, they fall in love, and have six baby rabbits, who grow up fall in love and each couple has 6 rabbits. So, there are 18 'grand baby rabbits' who in turn grow up and mate, each couple producing 6 rabbits.

Meanwhile, the original couple are still in love and produce another 6 rabbits and they, in their turn produce babies.

Now, assuming this goes on for a year, and the gap between being born and giving birth is 6 weeks, how many rabbits will there be? (Please ignore the problems of incest and family quarrels. This is just a stats problem.)

The simple geometric progression to a factor of 3 is easy, but I cannot get my tired old brain around the numbers which take in to account the fact that rabbits breed more than once.

Can anybody help with either the calculation, or even better, a formula to apply

  • Epson 1510 scanner/printer ALWAYS prints test page?

Every time I switch the damn thing on it prints out an 'ink-heavy' test page, and as these inks are not cheap, (a cynic may say unnecessarily expensive, but God preserve me from cynicism) and I cannot stop it.

    Anybody know how?

PS I have emailed Epson four time on the matter. . . .I yet to have a response.

    Thanks.

  • Verifying a .dll file.?

I have a Samsung X20 running windows xp.

I am trying to download, from the Microsoft website, a trial version of Office. I have the .exe file on my hard drive, but it will not, despite hours of trying, load up. I get the message that 'access has been denied to 'Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\1033\msointl.dll and that I must 'verify access'

I have looked at the holding folder (1033) which will not open and when I look at properties it says there is nothing in the folder.

I have cleaned and repaired the registry but still nothing will work

    Can anybody help me?

  • We are told to respect other cultures. But can we. No anti Muslim rants please, but is this culture acceptable

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have defended a judicial sentence of 200 lashes for a rape victim,

The justice ministry said in a statement that the sentence was justified because the woman was in a car with an unrelated man.

The 19-year-old, who has not been named, was travelling in a car with a male friend last year, when the car was attacked by a gang of seven men who raped both of them.

Last week the court increased the woman's sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison.

It also banned her lawyer from the courtroom and took away his licence.

The Saudi justice ministry has defended the verdict and warned against "agitation through the media" - a sign of how sensitive the authorities are to the fact that the woman and her lawyer have sought to use the media to highlight the case

  • Problems opening downloaded programs. . .?

I use a laptop to connect to the web.

I live in France and use Orange.fr as my service provider.

Once connected to the web I use Mozilla Firefox to surf, which I installed following answers on Yahoo (for which thank you very much)

However, I have down loaded, again on advice from experts on Answers a CrapCleaner and an AVG antivirus program.

When I try to open them I get told I do not have the necessary 'permissions' more precisely 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access this file'

I have tried moving the files into different folders but can't get it to work.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  • My laptop starts very slowly indeed. . .?

It's quite a powerfull wee job and I defrag it regularly and run a registry check.

I have some quite heavy duty programs on it and when I go control alt delete they are all showing.

Could this cause the slow running and if so how can I 'disconnect' them without deleting them?

  • Should terrorists be given 'political prisoner' status?

It is reported in today's Sunday Observer that because convicted Muslim terrorists are having/will be given a hard time from other prisoners, and the Prison Service seems unable to guarantee their safety, there should be special prisons built exclusively for this category of prisoner.

Does not this give them a separate status as 'political prisoners'?

And should it be allowed to happen?

  • Has anybody else been gypped by Registry Patrol?

Following a question on this forum about problems with Explorer 7 (Thank you everybody who recommended FireFox I have had no troubles since) I followed up a hyperlink and came to Registry Patrol (www.registrypatrol.com). It looked good so I paid up my $29.95 thru' PayPal and awaited the unlock code. . . nearly 2 weeks later still no code.

All my emails to both Registry Patrol and The Post Media Network who deal with their sales it seems are returned as 'undeliverable'.

I have complained to PayPal but their guarantees are only good for physical goods.

So it seems I have been stuffed by Registry Patrol.

Anybody out there had the same, or even better is in a position to kick *** and get them to send me my unlock code, which for me is the preferred option.

    Any help gratefully received.

PS I know its only $29.95. . . but hey, this sort of thing is bad for internet trading world wide.

  • Is a 45 kilo four year old a 'neglected child'?

I have it on impeccable authority that a 4 year old child (boy) weighing 45 kilos (that's 99 lbs or over 7 stone) has been admitted to a local hospital.

    He is very ill.

Without writing streams of vituperation against the parents is there anything that can be done?

In a parallel case I know of a child died of malnutrition having been fed only on 'rice milk' and an attempted prosecution failed.

  • Here is a maths problem I have never solved although it should be solvable?

A cube with sides of 1 metre stands against a wall.

The wall is precisely 90 degrees to the ground.

A ladder 8 metres long is placed against the wall so that it touches the outside edge of the cube.

How far along the ladder does the contact take place?

It seems to me there are only 2 possible answers but I am b******d if I can work it out.

    Can you?

  • What is a right? And do animals have them?

A civil war was fought in North America over the 'right' of a man to be free. Many years later Martin Luther King led a movement, against sometimes fierce resistance, to establish those rights.

This is a clear case to me of rights being denied, fought for, and eventually accepted.

I would guess that most people in the world are now against slavery.

In this context do animals have rights? If so who fought for them? Who granted them?

Please keep you answers fairly short.

  • Please settle an argument about ballistics. . .?

    A silly 'pub' argument.

A bullet fired from a gun exactly horizontally will hit the ground at exactly the same time as a bullet dropped from the same height as the gun barrel.

My friend maintains the force of gravity being the same on both objects they will hit the ground simultaneously.

I maintain that although this is true in a 'no atmosphere' situation, where there is an atmosphere the fired bullet is effectively 'flying'; and will hit the ground long after the dropped bullet.

    Which of us is right?
