  • Why the rush to award best answer?

This used to be an unwind place at the end of the day...helping kids with homework...answering the unanswerable. I haven't been able to participate in months since they changed the format AGAIN....is there a problem for Y!A if people let the questions sit for a day or two?? Sheesh..

  • Tolkien quotes.....need some?

I'm looking for some of the brilliant quotes (pretty pretty please...not from the films unless it comes ver batim from the book(s).)

Looking for this type of thing:

The treacherous are ever distrustful" Gandalf

"The hasty stroke goes oft astray" Aragorn

"Where will wants not, a way opens" Eowyn as Dernhelm

"Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!" Eomer

"The hands of the king are the hands of a healer, and so the rightful king could ever be known" ioreth

"But who knows what she spoke to the darkness alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all her life seemed shrinking, and the walls of her bower closing in about her, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in?" Gandalf

"Pay heed to the tales of old wives. It may well be that they alone keep in memory what it was once needful for the wise to know" Elrond

From any Tolkien jotting, doesn't have to be Middle-earth/Arda based

  • Just discovered someone copied one of my answers....?

....verbatim, in it's entirety from an answer I'd given 2 years ago....

    Would you be flattered?

    Irritated?

Wondering what other answers they've copied??

    Not give a cr@p?

    Never had this experience before....

Just curious if anyone else has had this happen...

  • Why the hurry to oust Trump?

I'm reading through some of these paranoid posts, and wonder if I'm the only one who sees this ridiculous man as something of a miracle...we haven't seen this much interest or discourse, true concern over who we hire to lead us in many years. Whether he manages to stay in or not, I'm frankly glad of the wrench in the dangerous 2 party and don't you dare step outside your side engine...needs MORE shaking up IMHO.

  • Lord of the Rings misquotes and quotes attributed incorrectly...?

I'm looking for a list of Tolkien quotes that are wrong. Like "Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest star", or the obverse, like what is the quote that's based on this passage: <for a while they stood there, like men on the edge of a sleep where nightmare lurks, holding it off> "though they know that they can only come to the morning through the shadows".

Odd request, but there's a purpose behind the odd...thanks

  • In The Hobbit, DOS and BO5A, is it just my perception, or does Legolas's face appear somewhat digitized?

There's a wierd pallour or something. I have the extended set appendices and they don't mention it that I've seen, but there's something not quite right there..

  • How did 'probably' become 'prolly'?

I DO get why it's used to abbreviate in texting, but I'm finding kids in particular that think 'prolly' is an actual word. WTF?

    It's like nails on a chalk-board..

  • Do people's mispronunciation of common words exasperate you?

I work in the Real Estate industry, and hear Realtors call themselves Realitors every day. There's no 'i' in the word. I understand where these conversions happen (confusing realty for reality, but transposing it even further by swapping the already wrong L and I).

Worse yet is adding the extra 'U' in nuclear. No 'U' or 'OO" in the middle there. But so many say nucular. Do teachers and parents no longer correct incorrect language skills? My kid learned from both that she'd sound like an idiot if she didn't say the words correctly, so she learned from the mistakes caught.

  • Is anyone else blown away by the 1000 Italians playing Foo Fighters 'Learn to Fly'?

This is almost as awesome as seeing the actual band live on Dave's Birthday this year...

  • Organized panhandlers....am I the only one who NEVER gives?

Here in SoCal, due to mild weather and pretty socked in population, we have more than our fair share of people begging...like on every busy corner and they sit right where they can watch you at every fast food place and see clearly when you're given change, which they want....then they give you grief as it's never enough or God forbid, you give them food. Most of my local ones are overweight, and they operate in almost gang-like groups, and have shift-changes where they hand off their signs to the next shift. I make sure to get eye-contact with the ones watching me receive change at McDonalds in particular....and make sure they see my change go in the collection container screwed to the wall under the window, for the Rondal McDonald House or whatever it is. They always yell when I drive past, but that attitude that I personally OWE them something just infuriates me....

  • Male solo singing, ethereal, like Enya or Billy Boyd singing Pippin's Edge of Night....?

I just answered a question looking for solo MALE vocals like this, and all I could come up with were the Enya-like females Sheila Chandra, Loreena McKennit in their slower stuff....did a search and for some reason I'm not finding easy links to this type of new age stuff or ancient stuff with men singing...

Anyone know of ethereal male solo singing that guts you like Enya??

  • Does anyone else re-cook packaged food that normal people consider done enough?

I will fish through a bag of pretzels and pick the darkest ones...same for CheezIts and other baked (and friend) snax.

Got tired of never having enough browned bits, and so fire up the oven and darken my favourites en masse so that every piece is toasty brown. Have been told that this is weird. Am I truly alone??

  • Why do people say some words completely wrong?

This drives me crazy sometimes...like Noo-Q-ler for Nuclear (only one U in there), or Real-IT-or for Realtor (no i in there at all), there's a radio ad for a company with Etcetera in their name, and the singer clearly says EK-set-ra, the T comes before the C and there's no K sound in there...

Why do they no longer correct stuff like this in school? I remember distinct discussions about how we didn't want to sound like idiots so we'd best learn the correct pronunciation and useage of our words....

  • Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade 2015:?

Last time we attended, the recommended hotel was MANY miles away, in a much better area but it took forever to get to the ball, all of us in our LOTR, 17th century, Steampunk and other various and HOT costumes bouncing around of the party bus. The site is fabulous (the Park Plaza) but is in such a bad area. Suggestions?

Plot-holes happen, but that seemed really

    obvious to me.
