Why does Ontario close its black bass season from mid-November until late-June but adjacent US states and Canadian provinces do not?
I'm a catch and release fisherman from Ontario. What puzzles me is that the Ontario government bans even catch and release fishing for black bass in its water between mid-November and late-June, whereas neighbouring jurisdictions such as New York have a year-round open season for black bass and allow catch and retain even during the spawn. The government claims to be only protecting the fish while they're fending for their young and claims that if the season were open all year, then populations would be driven to extirpation. However, I find such claims to be absurd given the following:
1. As long as catch and release is practised, the fish returned to the water are more likely than not to survive. True, it doesn't result in a 100% survival rate, but black bass are one of the species that respond the best to catch and release according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
2. Bass season is open all year throughout much of the US; catch and retain along with size limits may change throughout the year (eg. catch and release only during spawn). For example, in FL, black bass which are not too small (< 14 in) or of mating size (> 22 in) can generally be taken year-round with a catch and retain limit of 5 fish a day. The same black bass species found in ON can be found in FL waters as well. Wouldn't FL's black bass populations be driven to extirpation by now if the Ontario government's claims were to be true?
2 AnswersOther - Canada7 years agoShould I drop my precalculus class (Advanced Functions) ?
I'm in Grade 12 Advanced Functions and we just finished our rational functions unit and I got a test back with a 44 because the entire test was based upon actual calculus with limits of a function, derivatives, exact mins and maxes and exact slopes of tangents. It's so annoying considering that my friends from other schools say that they don't learn this until the Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors course in second semester and this test is dragging my mark down the drain. Before this test, my overall was 61 and now it's dropped to a 53. Any advice as to whether or not I should drop the course? I understand it will close some doors, but I am literally drowning in the course and I am literally going insane trying to understand all that calculus without the actual foundations to it.
I'm currently planning on doing Biology in University and I intend on applying to Wilfred Laurier for Biology (Arts), where the only requirement is Grade 12 University English (ENG4U) and Grade 12 University Biology (SBI4U). I'm doing excellent in Grade 12 AP Biology with an overall of 88 and have English next semester.
1 AnswerPrimary & Secondary Education8 years agoI had a not at fault accident, now what?
I was stopping for a stoplight yesterday afternoon and after coming to a complete stop, the car behind me rear ended me. At the collision reporting centre, the police officer said that I was not at fault and the accident was 100% the other driver's fault. Does this mean the insurance company will perceive it as the other driver's fault and it won't be on my driving record? In addition, the accident took place in Ontario, so I'm asking under Ontario law.
1 AnswerLaw Enforcement & Police8 years agoChihuahua keeps biting me! Help!?
My 6 year-old Chihuahua keeps trying to bite me when I try to put a leash onto her and take her out for a walk and then she lets loose of her contents on the carpet. I discipline her with a stern "NO BITE" when she bites and she continues to do the same thing everyday. In addition, she is spayed, so she shouldn't be spraying randomly but she is diabetic however, so I try to take her for a walk every 2.5 hours or so.
4 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhy do we keep issuing police the same cars if there are cars that can outperform them?
Here in North America, the majority of police forces usually issue Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors and Chevrolet Impalas as their workhorse of their vehicle fleet. Considering the fact that many motorcycles and luxury sports cars can outperform them and there have been several incidents where they have done so before the helicopters arrived, during which they endanger the lives of themselves and everybody else on the road (and they either get away with it if they're extremely lucky, or they're arrested at home later), why don't we issue our police officers with similar vehicles to catch up with them just like they do in Europe?
P.S. If the answer is about supporting the local economy by purchasing vehicles from American automobile manufacturers, then why specifically the Ford Crown Victoria or the Chevrolet Impala instead of sports cars from the same manufacturers such as the Chevrolet Corvette or at least better vehicles such as sports sedans (for example Dodge Charger) or pony cars such as the Chevrolet Camaro?
6 AnswersOther - Cars & Transportation9 years agoCan you drive pleasure craft with a master's certificate?
If someone has a master's certificate to operate say a cargo ship or a cruise ship, do they still need to acquire a Pleasure Craft Operator Card to drive a pleasure craft or is the master's certificate accepted as proof of competency under the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft regulations? Thanks in advance!
2 AnswersHobbies & Crafts10 years agoAre schools legally allowed to waive my constitutional rights and freedoms?
Today, my school vice principal claimed that she and the teaching staff had every authority to waive all of my constitutional rights, including the right to freedom of speech. Is it legal, or not and if it was illegal, then should I sue?
What happened?
Well, I was just talking about someone else and then the teachers said that I had to leave the classroom. Then I told them I was exercising my right to free speech and then they sent me to the VP's office. The vice principal then said that the school and the staff had every authority to waive anyone's rights, and act in an unconstitutional matter in any way.
