"Christian is my name, and Catholic my surname. The one designates me, while the other makes me specific. Thus am I attested and set apart... When we are called Catholics it is by this appellation that our people are kept apart from any heretical name."

  • How to get -(a-b)(b-c)(c-a) from ab(a-b)+bc(b-c)+ca(c-a)?

    I was wondering if anyone could really explain this to me. I came across a formula which states : ab(a-b)+bc(b-c)+ca(c-a) = -(a-b)(b-c)(c-a)

    ~~~
    I am able to work the problem our from -(a-b)(b-c)(c-a) to get ab(a-b)+bc(b-c)+ca(c-a); however, I am not able to get it the other way around.
    E.g.,: -(a-b)(b-c)(c-a)
    -(ab - ac - b² + bc)(c-a)
    -(abc - a²b - ac² + a²c - b²c + ab² + bc² - abc)
    - abc + a²b + ac² - a²c + b²c - ab² - bc² + abc
    a²b + ac² - a²c + b²c - ab² - bc²
    Rearrange:
    (a²b - ab²) + (b²c - bc²) + (ac² - a²c)
    ab(a-b)+bc(b-c)+ca(c-a)
    ~~~

    So, I was just a bit curious about it.

    So I was mainly wondering how to get -(a-b)(b-c)(c-a) from ab(a-b)+bc(b-c)+ca(c-a)

  • B-tree file system; who here uses it? and what are your experiences and thoughts?

    The B-tree file system (Btrfs) has been out for as far back as Linux 2.6.25. Oracle plans to push it out in production within the upcoming months.

    I am currently trying it myself on a small 80GB HDD with a GPT layout under Sabayon 9 (KDE) Linux 3.4. Even though it is said that it doesn't do too well under small HDDs, it seems to be working very well; no problems so far.

    I took a look at an a tour of btrfs video (19 Jan 2012) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxWuaozpe2I and found it to be a very interesting filesystem.

    What are your thoughts?

  • What exactly are the fundamentals of Fundamentalist?

    Fundamental is the root word for Fundamentalist and Fundamentalism. However, Fundamental generally means pertaining to the foundation or basics of something; or pertaining to the original or primary source.

    Now all Fundamentalists claim to be Christian (at least here on Y!A), and most (or in my case; all that I have come across) claim to be Bible Fundamentalists. Though many of them have very little knowledge or understanding what the First Christians taught or even the origin of the Bible. A good deal of them seem to express that God gave the Bible directly from heaven, or even think that the Bible was originally written in English.

    So as a Fundamentalist, wouldn't the priority be to research all of the writings of the Early Christians e.g., St. Ignatius Of Antioch, Saint Athanasius, Saint Augustine, Saint Cyprian, &c., as that would be going back to the fundamentals of Christianity?

    If not, what exactly becomes the original source of faith and doctrine for Fundamentalists?

    Since all seem to agree with the Protestant doctrines such as certain doctrines of Martin Luther, Calvin, &c., wouldn't their fundamentals only go as far back as the the 16th century? (This is logically looking at it).

  • Why is the race card being pull yet again with concerns to Obama?

    I ask this because I have seen some pretty (baseless) claims. E.g., http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aq1pP... ., Not only has this person made a generalization, one of the dumbest thing anyone can do (Christians, Atheists, &c., come in all races)., but they lack any statistical information to back up their claim.

    For instance (According to CNN http://thesocietypages.org/colorline/2008/11/06/14... ):

    ⁍ Obama received 49% of all the male votes (vs. 48% for McCain) and 56% of the female votes (vs. 43% for McCain). But once you break it down by race, Obama only received 41% of the White male vote (vs. 57% for McCain) and 46% of the White female vote (vs. 53% for McCain).

    If it was a Racism issue, the numbers would have been much lower.

    ⁍ 54% of Catholics voted for Obama (vs. 45% for McCain), although among White Catholics, 47% voted for Obama while 52% for McCain.

    This one surprised me as his ethics are contrary to that of Christian ethics.

    I personally didn't vote for him, simply because I didn't agree with any of his policies, and I still don't agree with his policies. Yet you have dumbasses who make such ridiculous claims.

    I mean Obama has made some pretty racist remarks e.g., Y!A post http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200803... and yet I don't hear many minorities saying anything. I say many, because I have heard few African American conservatives speak out about it.

    At any rate, I find the whole racists bullshit to be getting old and people need to grow the hell up. Their are racist people within all ethnic demographies, though most seem to single out only one ethnic group.

  • Is anyone else excited about the up coming version of Gnu Image Manipulation Program (2.8)?

    Gnu Image Manipulation Program (a.k.a. GIMP) version 2.8 is getting closer to release. Many are speculating that it may be a close as next month some time (though we know not to hold our breath).

    At any rate, there are many new features; Single Window UI, Warp Transform, Seamless Clone, &c. And also, it looks like version 2.10 will be skipped and version 3.0 will be the next release (though it might be under the guise of 2.10).

  • Do people really think that the Tea Party (persons) were a bunch of racists and terrorists?

    I just saw someone recently post "Tea Party Terrorists."

    Last I check, there was no: murder, rape, deification in public and on police vehicles, Public sexual intercourse, Public Masturbation, Suicides, Arson, thefts, Telling victims not to go to the police and let it be handled from within their little click, &c. Which all happened with the Liberal Wall Street protesters who had no idea what the hell they were/are protesting.

    From the message that I got from the Tea Party, they wanted smaller govern't, reduced govern't spending, &c.

    Though we have people who come up with, "they are terrorists," and "they want to destroy the earth and want dirty air and water," yet they left no trash what-so-ever behind when they were done. While the Wall Street Protesters left 30 tons (60, 000 lbs) of garbage behind., in the LA protest alone,, for the city workers to clean up. Also they were talking crap about the Jews (caught on camera)!

    So what am I missing here? How again are the Tea Party personnel terrorist? and how are they racist?

  • Has anyone here personally been to Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls?

    According to the legend, Our Lord appeared to Pope St. Sylvester I (314-337), in the year 320, during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great and requested the holy Pontiff to build a chruch over the tomb of the great Apostle of the Gentiles. It was to contain 270 niches in the nave walls to accommodate the portraits of all the Popes from the first Peter to the last Peter. The portrait of St. Sylvester, and of his successdor Marcus, and their thirty-three predecessors, were all painted apparently by the same artist. The portraits of the succeeding Popes were generally added, one by one, by different hands, probably right after their deaths, on orders of their successors. The magnificent Bascilica was destroyed by fire in 1823, during the reign of Pius VII. His successdor, Leo XII (1823-1829), ordered it rebuilt. It was complete during the reign of Pius IX (1846-1878), who ordered all of the portraits of the popes restored to their proper nichees before he consecrated the Basilica. They were faithfully copied in imperishable mossics from copperplates executed by an artist around 1775 for a firm who manufactured them in various sizes for tourists. Under each medallion of the Pontiffs in the restored bascilica is an engraved plate with the number and name of the successor of Peter and the length of the reign. Irrefutable proof testifying to the unbroken line of the first occupant of Peter's Chair to the last.

    It is a Beautiful Cathedral:

  • To Greek Orthodox, I was wondering, do you also see things the way that Zena E Charis χάρις sees things?

    Zena E Charis χάρις constantly makes sure that everyone knows that she is a "Greek Orthodox" and constantly spouts out offensive Anti-Catholic statements. e.g., http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqVR2...

    "THE ROMAN CATHOLICS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO READ "

    and implies that we [Catholics] are idolaters because we use images (whether they are carved, painted, or anything in between). I find it funny because all Orthodox Churches also use images.

    She expresses that (according to her) the Greek Orthodox Church does not believe in the Intersession of the Saints http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201112... . Which I thought all Orthodox Churches accepted the Intersession of the Saints e.g., http://syrorthodoxchurch.com/english-Dateien/Page5... && http://syrorthodoxchurch.com/english-Dateien/Page4... .

    I just find it to be rather odd. I understand that she is merely one voice and does not speak on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Church.

    Though I was wondering if any others., Greek Orthodox., feel the same that she does?

    I am just wondering if there are any other who agree with this person. I have already come across some Orthodox (whether Russian Orthodox or Greek &.,) who do not share the same views.

    Though, I am beginning to wonder how accurate Zena E is when explaining the Greek Orthodox Doctrine, or is it merely just her opinions?

    Thanks

    PS I mean no offense with these question, it is just that curiosity is getting the best of me at this point.

  • Does anyone here have a good understanding of Matthew xxvi. 39?

    The verse:

    And being gone forward a little, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou. [Matth. xxvi. 39]

    Many seem to misunderstand this verse thinking that Jesus here is showing a form of fear which is completely incorrect. I was wondering if anyone has a deep understanding of this verse.

  • Why do some Protestants think that Petros and Petra within the Bible mean two different things?

    Some claim that in the Bible (Matth. xvi) Petros (Πέτρος) means pebble and petra (πέτρᾳ) means rock.

    If you are one to believe this, how did you come to this conclusion?

  • An interesting "Who am I" riddle, does anyone know the answer?

    I was born in one country, raised in another.

    My father was born in another country.

    I was not his only child.

    He fathered several children with numerous women.

    I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me.

    My mother died at an early age from cancer.

    Although my father deserted me and my mother raised me, I later wrote a book idolizing my father not my mother.

    Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

    My birth records were sketchy.

    No one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

    I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my new country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs and didn't follow Christianity, except inthe public eye under scrutiny.

    I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.

    That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and embarked on a new career.

    I wrote a book about my struggles growing up.

    It was clear to those who read my memoirs, that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

    I became active in local politics in my 30's then, with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s.

    They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything.

    I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization.

    Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me, as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

    I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances.

    This bolstered my ego.

    At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy...

    I was very critical of my country in the last war, and seized every opportunity to bash my country.

    But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy.

    I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better, and every poor person would be fed and housed for free.

    I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.

    It was the free market, banks and corporations.

    I decided to start making citizens hate them and, if they became envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.

    I called mine "A People's Campaign"..

    That sounded good to all people.

    I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain widespread popular support.

    I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope', together we could change our country and the world.

    So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities".

    My true views were not widely known and I kept them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.

    I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people associated with. I'm glad they didn't.

    Then I became the most powerful man in the world.

    And then the world learned the truth.

    Who am I?

  • Why do so many Protestant Bibles have the word "Image" added when it was never in the original text?

    Most Protestants accuse the Catholic Church of adding and removing from the Bible. Though most Protestant bibles have the word "image" added to Exodus xx. 4 & Deut. v. 8.

    e.g.,

    English Standard Edition

    4"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    8"'You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    21 KJV; KJV; NKJV

    4"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

    8Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth.

    8Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

    8 ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

    American Standard (ASE) ; NASE

    4Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    4“You shall not make for yourself [a]an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

    [a] Exodus 20:4 Or a graven image

    8 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

    8 ‘You shall not make for yourself [a]an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above [b]or on the earth beneath [c]or in the water under the earth.

    [a]Deuteronomy 5:8 Or a graven image

    [b]Deuteronomy 5:8 Lit or what is

    [c]Deuteronomy 5:8 Lit or what is

    NIV

    4“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

    8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

    Data obtained from http://www.biblegateway.com/ , accessed on July 17, 2011 @ 2100 hrs.

    The Latin Vulgate uses the word Sulptile which a direct translation of the Hebrew פֶסֶל (pesel) and literally means "Graven Thing" or "Carved Thing" that which is used as an idol. The Greek uses the word "ἔιδωλον" or Idol.

    If the Latin were to conform to "Graven Image" it would have to read as Imaginem Sculptum. Sculptile (sculptulis) and Sculptus (sculpta \ sculptum) sound very similar, because Sculptus is the root for Sculptile. Sculptus alone literally means graven (carving).

    So why is the word "image" added to your bibles?

  • Has anyone else ever been called a "LYING DEVIL!!!" by an ex-catholic?

    And then they blocked you, and then claimed that you were flagging all of his/her questions trying to suppress the truth.

    About a day and a half after this person blocked me I received another PM from him:

    Subject: "Devil" with a message of accusation of flagging his questions and trying to hide the truth (whatever that means). Being block, one is unable to participate with the question (that is to include flagging a question), you are redirected, and cannot PM.

    So has anyone else had one of these?

  • Ex-catholics, did you ever research any of the Church Dogmas that you disagreed with while still a Catholic?

    I ask because all who have claimed to be ex-catholic on Y!A, have shown that they know diddly squat about the Church and Her teachings. Did any of you ever ask yourself :

    "hummm... I don't understand (or agree with) this doctrine that the Church teaches, Why does the Church teach it? Why don't I do a little research by reading what the Early Church Fathers had to say, or the Church Doctors, what did they have to say?"

    I find it ironic, that every ex-catholic I have come across, have done little to no research to understand the Catholic Doctrine and Theology. Yet they jump ship and do as much research to go on an offensive attack against the Church with the neochristianis.

    It is like what a JW asked me once. He said "in college, if you are in a class where the teacher is no good and you are failing because of him/her, what do you do?" His answer "you go else where."

    I feel like there are many who have this mentality, so simple minded. Anyone smart would look at it as:

    Well if I am in a Math Class, it is best to find a teacher who teaches the same subject. What good would it do you, to go to an English teacher for math? LOL he didn't like that comeback, though that's the reality of things.

    So have any of you actually done some legitimate studying before jumping ship?

    I know that it is obviously Koine Greek. Also from what I have been able to determine, within the Greek Bible, it [κεχαριτωμένη] seems to only be used once, and is only used for Θεοτόκος. Is this correct.
