Why do some men drop the ball when it comes to Birthdays/Valentines Day/ Christmas etc?

I get that some men may find it stupid or they just don't enjoy celebrating those days but you would think that if their spouse enjoyed recieving things on those special occasions that they would suck it up plaster on a smile and make her happy. So why is it that some guys still drop the ball?

I've had this issue for most of my life but the past sixth months have been really dire. When I lay down to sleep my mind instantaneously starts racing about arbitrary things. For example something like strawberries will burst up into my head and I start wondering where the original strawberry came from, why is it called a strawberry, are there special types of strawberries, are all strawberries red or can they be any color, were strawberries an accident or was someone trying to create them. Subsequent to something like that I'll try and think of the color black like the absence of everything but then my mind just keeps thinking "black, black, black." There are times during the day when I'll be doing something and I'll see something or hear something, then my mind completely focuses on that one thing so much so that it's hard for me to do anything else.

I'm 18 and starting college soon could this just be some form of stress that's occurring because I don't know what I want to do as far as choosing a profession? If so should I go to a doctor and see if there is anything he/she can do. I'm open to anything.

Also I smudge daily are there any herbs that help with soothing an overactive mind (other than maybe lavender).
