How do I get a new windows install disc? Windows won’t install?

My computer had some issues and I decided to upgrade the main board and processor to speed up the system.

I replaced the main board and processor with an ASUS main board with an intel I5 processor. I had to replace the RAM too and got 8gb of ram in the system.

I also replaced the HDD with an SSD and decided to upgrade to a recent AMD Radeon Card for graphics.

I was able to keep the CD-ROM drive and had to rig up a way to link the 3 and 5 inch floppy drives up via an auxillary floppy controller via an internal usb port as the new main board lacked a floppy controller.

I had to find a new modem that fit pci express as the main board only had ethernet.

I went to install windows ME on the system and it worked like crap. It didn’t work with the hardware.

Apparently my install disc is bad, and where  would I get a new windows ME disc?

My ssd broke and if I plug it in my computer gets stuck on the bios load up screen. Does this give any clues to what's wrong with it?

    Favourite answer:

No clues - the computer is simply trying to boot off the broken SSD hence the failure.

Restart the computer immediately press the boot override key and boot off the working SSD. You can then download the toolkit from the broken SSD's manufacturers website to test the hard drive. However all SSD's have a life expectancy, and do fail. You may be able to get your data off or you may have to send it to data recovery specialists but they are not cheap.

How long is this GPU and CPU shortage going to last?

When is the price of GPU and CPU going to stop going up and the massive shortage of GPU and CPU by Intel and AMD going get better. I don’t know how and why both very large companies Intel and AMD both have CPU shortage you would think they would put more money into it to not have shortage.

The GPU I can understand a bit as a lot of the gamers have not upgraded and the cryptocurrency rage. When is price of GPU and CPU going come down?

Where do I find parts for a computer running windows 98? New install disc?

I am having some major computer problems, the computer was randomly dialing out when offline and popping up spam windows and showing all kinds of inappropriate pictures and ads for all kinds of questionable things, then the computer went silent and smelled hot and a puff of smoke 💨 came out the back.

It appears that the modem burnt looking. There are also burn marks around the thing with metal fins coming out of the big circuit board.

The hard drive is also apparently has burn marks on the circuit board

I assume the hard drive failed and I will have to get a new windows 98 disc and it’s almost impossible to find them. OfficeDepot doesn’t have it. I also can’t find anything like the telephone modem circuit board thing and the modems that I find are totally different and i can’t find a the circuit board that the monitor connects to.

The geek squad service said that the problem didn’t look good and they couldn’t find parts for a system like this, and I could try to track down parts or just junk the system.

I had a very good system with a 56k modem, 128 mb of ram (later upgraded to 256mb) a 750mhz amd duron processor, a RAGE graphics with 32 megabytes of video ram, Yamaha Sound Card with midi game port, 52x cd ROM drive, and both a 3.5 inch and a 5.25 inch floppy drive. It also had a 20 gig hard drive.

It’s almost impossible to find parts for this rig, should I just junk it? Replacing it would mean learning something entirely new and would it have features my rig has now?

How do i figure out what type/size of motherboard would work in my desktop/ best place to look?  See Below?

I am NOT a computer techie type person so any responses and help need to be in basic terms

One of my computers is a HP Compaq DC7700.

The current mother board is a "Hewlett-Packard 0A54H".  I am trying to find out if I were to get a new mother board for this PC, where do I look and what would be compatible/fit? And what the cost might be (just for reference), as i realize the mother board might cost more then the computer is worth (to me).

The computer works, but I believe the graphics is going, but it is integrated so from my understanding that means I would likely have to replace the mother board (so I just thought I'd check getting a new one).***So to reiterate, what I'm hoping someone can help me with is  finding "... a mother board for this PC, where do I look and what would be compatible/fit?

How much could I get for this pc?

    Favourite answer:

    Used computer is worth $100

Used 24" display (if in perfect condition) is worth $75

speakers, mouse and keyboard are included with computer

People like to greatly over-estimate the value of their used hardware.  But if someone offered you $200 for the whole lot, that would be more than fair.

Is my gaming and trolling pc any good? How does it compare? What upgrades would be good?

I have a full ATX case with a full ATX main board from ASUS. There is an INTEL Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz processor and an Nvidia G Force graphics card with 256 megabytes of vram. The system has 4 Gigabytes of system ram and includes two hard drives.

One hard drive has a capacity of 350 gb and is the boot drive, the other has a capacity of 500 gb and is the multimedia drive.

The system has a DVD burner and and from drive (both 48x), and has a Zip drive as well as a tape drive and both a 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch floppy disc drive

There is a 10/100 ethernet card in the system as well as a 56k modem.

The system is water cooled and has GamerGirl BathWater circulating in the water cooling kit. I also added the rgb color changing lights for inside the PC case.

The system presently runs windows Vista and performs very well.

I buy one new hardware/software item every year to upgrade my rig.

Some of my past upgrades were adding an additional 2 gb of ram to now have 4gb

    Adding a second hard drive

    Adding the water cooling

Adding the case lights and GamerGirl bath water for improved performance

What upgrade would be most effective this year?

What is wrong with my computer? Windows XP works like CRAP? Should I upgrade to Vista?

I can no longer get a new XP CD from Microsoft and my xp cd was lost when moving. XP is terribly sluggish and has been popping up tons of spam windows and often shows the BLUE SCREEN error and reboots.

It has a 2.4ghz AMD Athlon 64 processor and originally had 2gb of ram which I added another 2gb of ram to hopefully make it run better (total of 4 ram slots for a max of  8gb) but that just seemed to help the malware. It also has an Nvidia GPU with 512mb of video ram and directx10 support. It has a dvd burner and a SATA HDD with 500 gb plus a 1 terabyte added SSD. It also has an added blue ray burner as well as a Zip drive and an sd card reader as well as both a 5 and a 3 inch floppy drive.

It has a 56k v90 voice fax modem from 3com and a netgear gigabit PCI adapter as well as an added usb 3.0 card with a connected wireless N external antenna.

I will be able to get a burned disc copy of Vista at a pawn shop (they don’t have XP) and wonder if reformatting and installing vista would fix the computer.

I also have a laptop running XP and should I upgrade that to vista as well?

Is it normal for some types/brands of PC hard drives to make noise?  See below?

I have a NEW Dell xps 8940 special edition.  The Seagate Barracuda 2TB makes an almost constant Clickity-click, Clickity-Click, Clickity-Click noise and it is a bit on the loader side.  I contacted Dell about it, in trying to make a long story short; the Dell/ chat tech said it was a fan issue- sent out two new fans and a Tech and replaced fans, noise continued, 1st onsite tech said that noise is NOT normal - connected with Dell rep, trouble shot, scans, settings....all normal - sent out a new hard drive with new tech.  Second tech replaced HD, noise continued and 2nd tech said noise is normal.

I contacted Dell just to confirm because I'm now confused, one Tech said its normal (and obviously Dell must not think it is normal as they sent out the new hard drive) and then being told by a 2nd Tech sent out by (World Wide Tech Support) being told something different.

All of the computers I've ever owned have never made this type of noise/sound?  I realize I can still return the computer but what a pain in the butt.

    HELP, any thoughts, Option's, Suggestions?

Do I have too many computers? ?

    Favourite answer:

depends. do you actually use them all?

as long as they are useful and not just sitting around unused, i don't see the problem.

if you can do it all on one or 2, then i don't see a need for the 3rd.

Is it worth going form an HD7970 3GB to 1650 4GB?

A friend of mine is willing to sell me his 1650 for $150 because he managed to get his hands on a 3060Ti. I think $150 is a really good price for a 1650 but I'm not entirely sure if the performance bump would be big enough to justify the purchase.

I looked up on YouTube but couldn't find a direct comparison between the two cards hence the question.

    Thanks.
