  Statistically, how likely is dying from falling off a horse?

  Probability of dying is pretty small.

  I only know three people who have died of a horse related accident and none of them were riding.     One was crushed up against a stall wall.   One was crushed up against the wall inside the trailer.  One was too fat for a small/unconditioned horse, the horse fell down at the mounting block and rolled over her.     All of these types of incidents are relatively easily prevented just like most car accidents are easily prevented.

  I do know quite a few people who have fallen and had broken bones and other injuries, but I've never known anyone to have an injury like Christopher Reeve from riding.

  By the way, not EVERYONE falls off.   It depends a whole lot on the horse, the rider, the type of training they receive, the type of activities they are doing, etc.    There's a guy on here Snezzy who brags about his wife being tossed over and over and over by her horse.   I can only presume she's an ignorant moron because no intelligent or safety-oriented person would think they can solve a behavior problem this way.

  How old is too old to train a horse?

  Is 16 too old to train a healthy ottb that loves to run on barrels and poles if sent to a professional trainer ? Would it be a waste of money,would he retain any of the information or is it kind of a hit or miss and i would just need to send him to find out?

  Would you continue to board a lame horse?

  I have a client who has been boarding her horse at my stable for the last two years. She pays for full-service boarding. The only time she comes around is for vet visits which she pays directly, about every 4 to 5 months. Besides taking the horse around for a walk around the property, no one rides or does any intense exercise with the horse. The owner says the horse is lame and can't be ridden at this time. So I really don't see the point of owning a horse you can't enjoy.

  My horse is hurt. Can't reach my vet. Please help?

  I usually use a lead shank on my horse. I was giving this girl a lesson on him and after I told her to put him on cross ties once bridle came off. She ended up putting the lead shank on and clipped it to the stall. My horse ended up getting spook and ended up yanking his head against the lead shank. He hurt his mouth and face from that and his jaw is crooked. I believe he dislocated it. I tried calling my vet several times put is still off. Any advise on what to do until I can reach a vet.? This girl told me she was experienced but I will never leave him alone with someone else again.

  young or old horse? ?

  Hi I'm looking to buy a horse soon.  I thought it was finally time because I want to start competing in the 120 jumpers and my coach won't let me ride her horse forever. I'm 16 and this would be my first horse so I wanted an older horse, but my father thinks I should get a young one. he thinks it would be a waste of money. I was thinking anywhere from 10-13, he was thinking 5-8.  I don't necessarily want to bring a horse up at the moment, I wanna just start competing. he says that's to old for a horse to be competitive, I don't think so. can we get a second opinion?

  1. should I get a young horse or an older one? 

  2. what age should a horse stop competing in high levels of show jumping?

  why does my horses hind legs give away?

  i have a 10 year old quarter horse who i rode out on a 20k trail ride last weekend, his hind gave away an collapsed under him multiple times. he didnt fall right to the ground, they gave way his legs fell under himself then he caught himself. i thought it may have been something out so i got a chiropractor and yes his hip was out but has been continuing to do so after the fact of getting him done. ????

  girl abandoned horse, now wants horse back?

  About 10 years ago, this girl bought a horse from me. She couldn’t afford upkeep so brought the horse to her house and wasn’t keeping up with its care. She asked me to take it back and I would use the horse in my lesson program. Stupidly, this was agreed upon verbally. Now, I’ve been feeding the horse and paying for all expenses for the last 9 years (roughly $100k). All of a sudden, this girl wants the horse back. She’s seen the horse under 10 times in the last 9 years. We’ve all grown to love this horse and she was planned to stay here as a forever home. Today, the girl showed up with police and a trailer and took the horse. The cops said they couldn’t make her leave the horse on property because it was her property because of a bill of sale. Is that true? I had always been told that they couldn’t allow her to take the horse off private property, and that it would be a civil matter and have to go to court before any actions taken. I do plan on taking her to court with records of all of the horses expenses for the past 9 years, do i have a leg to stand on legally? Will this result in getting the horse back, money, or neither? Obviously preferred outcome is getting the horse back.

  Please help with my horse! ?

  So my horse will not canter in a small circle, by small circle I just mean like not the whole arena. He will trot it just fine but when it comes to canter he will try and side pass out and he will just keep stepping to the side as far as he can until I stop him. Also he did the same thing at gymkhana, every-time we were coming to a right turn like a barrel he wouldn’t turn the barrel he would just side pass when asked to turn. By side pass I mean it’s like shoulder and up he was engaged even had nose turned in but his hind quarters were not engaged and they wouldn’t move with him. I plan on getting him vetted and his teeth checked soon to make sure and I plan on speaking to his previous owner to make sure I’m not giving him incorrect commands and confusing him. Also he will canter and even gallop when given the perimeter  of the whole arena just not in smaller circles for example the circles that people do to get their horse on the right lead before running a pattern.

  how to stop a pony from biting and kicking other horses in the field?

  I have a 11hh 9year old gelding in a gelding only yard (5 horses in total)been here for 3yrs but his getting worse, they all go out on the field together. He spends half this time biting, chasing and kicking most of the herd, it seems playful but it is none stop and he picks on mainly 2 horse “one is rugged and often come in with damage tail flap on his rugs where he’s biting him! And the other is coming in with kick and bite marks every few days so I have to rug him now to protect him.he trys it with the other 2 but they send him packing Also he is a angel with other horses off of the field, riding, stables, around the yard, there is no single turn out at the yard ever

  How can I stop this as its not all the time, but way to much to ignore and its stressing out the other 2 horses

  Should I let my horse do this?

  So while riding my horse he will speed up into a fast shitty trot before cantering only on his left side and one more kick and he will canter but on the right side he doesn’t do this however. I let a friend ride him and she spent forever trying to get him to canter but every time he started the fast trot she made him slow down and do it again and justified it by saying I shouldn’t let him trot fast before cantering even though he’s my horse and I know he does it and how to get past it. Needless to say she was doing that forever and nothing changed she just ended up overworking him. Should I ignore her or try to get him to canter without trotting fast?
