Why use Microsoft Word's Reading Layout view?

Question

I haven't done a lot of research on this new feature of Word 2003, but it seems useless at best and annoying at worst. (Word attachments opened from Outlook open in Reading Layout view by default.) I teach an Introduction to Computers class, and I feel like a bad teacher when I tell the students that I don't know what Reading Layout view is for.

It lets you read more content in a single view, and can be used for fast reading. This view removes a lot of formatting.
