Marmite is a British savoury spread made from yeast extract, a by-product of the beer brewing process. It is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful taste that polarises consumer opinion and prompts its advertising slogan that you either "love it or hate it". It is similar to Australia and New Zealand's Vegemite. I had some vegemite this morning on my toast.

The Marmite Food Extract Company was formed in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1902, with Marmite as its main product. It was located there because breweries were located nearby and the products were readily available. It took a couple of years to get the taste right but in 1903 the product was winning prizes in food competitions,

By 1907, the product had become successful enough to require construction of a second factory at Camberwell Green in London. The main ingredients of Marmite manufactured in the UK are yeast extract, with lesser quantities of sodium chloride (common salt), wheatgerm extract, niacin, thiamine, spice extracts, riboflavin, and folic acid, although the precise composition is kept as a trade secret. By 1912, the discovery of vitamins was a boost for Marmite, as the spread is a rich source of the vitamin B complex; vitamin B12 is not naturally found in yeast extract, but is added to Marmite during manufacture.

I'm in the "love marmite" camp, although I did once try it on pancakes with orange juice and that wasn't very nice!

It's sad that Marmite has been bought out by Unilever. The new squeezy Marmite is god though. Mmmmmmmmmm!

It was a terrible accident in a lab. They were trying to discover a new skunk repelant, but there was an explosion. Some of the resultant goo splattered into the chief scientists mouth and he became insane. In the peak of his madness, he decided to market the toxic gunk as food. Luckily for him, there are a lot of crazed consumers out there who will buy anything.

Some really hungry guy with nothing to eat except for a slice of bread was cleaning his feet with a butter knife one day. After running it between his toes a few times, he came up with an idea for lunch. You can figure out the rest...

I'm not sure...but it had to be someone who looked at the inside of an oyster and said "oh, boy! Let's slurp this one down raw!"
