What's the opposite of mediocre?

Great question! I think that "exeptional" etc cannot be correct as mediocre lies somewhere in the middle of things and the answer could therefore be equally "pathetic"," bad," or something similar.
It's like saying that in the number range from 1 - 10 the opposite of 5 is 10 and that is clearly not correct. The opposite of 5 is probably minus 5. This being so the opposite of mediocre might be "worse than insipid" or simply "negative". Anyway, a great question. I'll look at the answers with interest.

On first glances I thought there could not be an opposite of the average since it is half-good, half-bad, but on further thought...
Mediocre = okay/average/acceptable, heading towards inferior.
Antonym must be... Outstanding?

Extraordinary.
Something could be extraordinarily good or bad, but either way, it's not mediocre!
