As far as we know, humans occupy the provisionally most advanced level in the hierarchy of metasystems. Our capacity for thought distinguishes us from the lower levels of life with unique characteristics, such as self-consciousness, tool making, imagination, planning, play, sense of humor and esthetic feelings.

We don't really know if the dolphins can rationalize, or if the great apes can plan, but as far as we know, humans are at the top of the chain.
