Wireless internet from cable modem?

I have a standard Telewest cable modem and the internet works fine when connected directly through the ethernet cable.

I have a wireless Netgear router which I used to use at my old residence plugged directly into the BT socket, but now I am trying to set it up connected to the cable modem.

I presume that I connect the ethernet port from the cable modem to one of the ethernet ports on the wireless modem?

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be transmitting any signal from the wireless as the laptop is not picking up any network.

HELP PLEASE !!

Update:

Guys, thank you for the tips so far. I will go home and try this weekend.

I do know that there is an issue with re-booting the equipment in special order and I did try that but didn't help.

I don't seem to have an "internet in" port for the wireless modem except one with a RJ-11 I think. The ethernet ports all seem to be for connecting to the PC's and are simply numbered 1-4.

It sounds like your router is designed for ADSL via a BT phone line & is therfore not suitable for cable broadband use. Sadly you need a wireless router designed for broadband ie: a pure ethernet router not an ADSL router as this would not have the required ethrnet port input only ethernet outputs (the input of the unit you have is from your old ADSL(BT phone) connection and thus is not suitable for cable internet connection). It looks like you need to replace your wireless router.

  • Turn everything off that will be using the internet.

Unplug the router and the modem.

Plug the ethernet cord from the modem into the port marked internet on the router.

    Wait a minute or two.

Plug the modem in, followed by the router.

Let your modem connect fully and then try logging onto the net on your laptop.

Or, make sure your wireless card and such is active. If none of that helps, try contacting the tech support of your internet provider.

If your router is turned on and wireless enable you should be picking up a signal. If you are not, make sure that the router is on and the wireless enable. Also check your laptop and make sure that you have not accidentally turned off the wireless on it. There should be an LED indicating to you that the wireless is on in the laptop, as well as a little switch somewhere on it that allows you to disable the signal for when you want to use it in a plane.
