Why don't we all?

Let's face it, we don't give as much to charity as our conscience would like us to. We come up with excuses like 'I can't afford it' or 'Ha;f the money gets spent on administrations so what's the point'. In reality we could afford a little more and we know admin is vital. Why not pick up an extra fiver tomorrow and instead of giving it to the manufacturers of Coca-cola or Benson and Hedges stick it in the nearest charity pot? I'm going to.

Update:

Ooops. 'Half' !

Update 2:

Charity begins at home does not mean 'keep everything for yourself' it means that you do not need to leave good works to large organisations, the little things that you can do yourself make all the difference.

Lilo, sorry you feel that way, I do work in a charity shop myself and we do grab a lot of the good stuff first. BUT we give our time for free and we pay the price that we would have charged a customer.

Everyone, if you are unhappy about the wages paid to the NSPCC for example then why not give to a small local charity or the PDSA?

Update 3:

Norag.....Like you I live from week to week right now. Well day to day for the last few weeks. I've had a bit of work this weekend thoug so I'll be giving a little back.

I do give to charity. I have a monthly direct debit set up for the NSPCC. You're right though..more people should give to charity. Even just dropping off used clothes to charity shops instead of selling them on Ebay is a really big help.

I applaud your generosity. Maybe I am just getting old, but there are very few charities that I give monetary donations to anymore. I will give of my time, and I do, but no longer give money. I just don't believe that it goes to where it is supposed to go to anymore. I do my share, soup kitchens, cleaning local animal shelters, helping senior citizens, veterans organizations and more. So, instead of money, tomorrow, I was going to do a couple hours work at the local animal shelter, and I will do an extra hour now just cause you asked!!! Have a great day!

I think the reason people dont give as much to charity as they used to in the old fashioned sense of sticking money in the collection tin is because of national charity days like comic relief etc where people donate on the night. Also with so many different ways to give I think we still give as much, we just donate by different methods such as credit card or by text message.

We have a standing order which donates 6.50 a month to the Wildlife Trusts. I am very happy with this and have no qualms telling other collectors I already give. May be I could afford more but I am happy with my contribution thank you. Your point is reasonable enough and nicely put - I think tomorrow I will donate a fiver to the first person that asks.

Why not put your loose change in a bottle and at the end of each month, donate it to a charity of your choice....that way, 12 groups get support....

    OR....

Instad of going to Glastonbury Festival (or another event)...have your own BBQ and invite friends....charge a small fee and set up the music....that way you don't lose your tent, you have decent toilets AND you are with friends....plus of course, the charity benefits

LOL it's a good idea, but don't forget some people find it really hard to give up smoking and the money they save from it is often their best reward. So maybe just the coke money for now eh?

  • Charity begins at home, id rather give my time to charity as they end up not seeing much of the money xxx
