Hull Floods, why do people expect the government to do everything for them?

Insurance will repair the house, replace the belongings, cover the cost of temporary accommodation. What else do they actually expect, it is not the governments fault either, just one of those things that happens and when build close to river and flood plains.

There are people living in motor homes complaining about their £15k kitchen being flood (which is insured), they need a wake up call to what 'problems' really are.

Update:

these people have had help, the waters have gone, but the goverment can wave a magic wand and stop the rain, dry the house out and cook them tea at the same time. It is a sign of our lazy society where we want everything on a plate.

because otherwise they'd have to think for theirselves!

I totally agree with you, we have no control over the weather, 'Freak' means just that.

they are lucky to be alive, some people weren't so lucky.

It's kind of funny. When you have a house that's a couple of miles from a river, you don't expect something like this to happen. Interestingly enough, there are some insurance companies in the Midwest that refuse to cover floods or people buy the policies in good faith, thinking that everything is covered only to find out that floods aren't. As much as I pay the government in taxes, I expect them to help the citizens of this country when disaster strikes. If anything at least send the National Guard to help with clean-up.

Well I'd like to see how you would react if it happened to you.

Tsunami in Indonesia - we give millions.

Floods in Eastern Europe inc. Germany 2 years ago - EU gives millions.

1 child goes missing in Portugal - 'we' give tens of thousands.

Earthquake in Pakistan - we give hundreds of thousands.

Flooding in Hull - we give fk all.

    Where's the logic?

You are right, insurance policies will cover the costs of temporary accommodation - but therein lies the problem - some of these people may not be able to move back into their homes for at least another year, insurance policies will not cover the cost of temporary accommodation for that length of time - thus they become homeless. These people will have, no doubt, paid taxes, which should, as UK citizens allow them the right to recompense.

What would you rather? Keep doling out masses of the Treasury's coffers to immigrants?

You know, I COMPLETELY agree with you. It always happens, playing the blame game. It is completely unfair to blame the government, they didn't cause the floods but these people feel like they must blame someone and the government is just a sitting duck waiting to take the fall. The government doesn't control the floods, don't blame them. I am not really sure about the insurance thing but it still doesn't justify pointing the finger at the government.

I don't think they expect the government to do everything for them. As they are probably all taxpayers they rightfully expect some help in this hour of need. I would guess that the main part of their wishes entails some kind of prevention plan to stop this happening again.

Our government is quick enough to throw money away on other countries that will never benefit because their corrupt leaders syphon it all off before the people who need it see it. Or to countries who take our money to train terrorists that then come here and blow us up.

So why not give some aid to our own people who's money it is anyway?

i agree, it is shocking the things people are throwing out, washing machines, tables and chairs etc etc, why ? these are not damaged they have just been sitting in a bit of water why cant they be cleaned and put back, i can understand beds and settees, carpets and curtains being ruined but metal and wood ??? why are we such a throw away society? i find it quite shameful, but i suppose so long as the insurance company pay out they dont care about the damage to the environment or the increase in my insurance. as for those who have no insurance, whos fault is that ? not the governments and not mine either. i pay £37 every month for unlimited cover why should i pay more because of the rain?

I agree, what right has Brown to offer my tax pounds to buy himself popularity.

I do accept that the floods could be devastating but those who chose not to insure themselves should only recieve help from charitable sources.

I would happily give up some of my time or spare money ona personal basis as I hope others will. But government money isnt for brown to squander.

because some insurance companys wont insure against flooding, and ppl cant sell the houses as nobody will buy, so obviously they need a little help. im guessing if you were in that situation you wouldnt be asking the question
