My kids found a huge caterpillar a few days ago so I did some research on the net to try to find out what it would turn into. It's going to be a Polyphemus Moth. It's already made it's cocoon and we're anxious to see what emerges. Hope the info below helps. It has lots of pics to help identify what you might find in your yard. I know more about bugs now that I even need to know, but when you have two curious kids it's good to know!

the hardship-loose or evergreen bagworm (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) varieties a cocoonlike bag with its head and legs protruding and dangles from a branch, finding like a small, grotesque Christmas decoration. The male metamorphoses into your uncomplicated moth. however the female remains interior the bag, having morphed right into a "larviform" creature that still looks like a caterpillar, and for this reason ensconced awaits the ministrations of the male. "while a male nicely-knownshows her, he friends together with her via skill of an elongate extensible copulatory equipment that is prolonged deep into the bag containing the female. the female isn't technically a caterpillar, yet she looks sufficient like one.

caterpillar is the larvae form for butterfly and moth. there are many other insects that have larvae form and then turn into cocoon, just like beetles, but they aren't called caterpillars. the only larvae that's called caterpillar is lepidopteran's larvae.

No. Sometimes we squash them/spray them/pour boiling water over them before that happens.
