    Favourite answer

    3/4 + 1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8

    8/7 + 1/4 = 32/28 + 7/28 = 39/28 = 1 11/28

This problem is asking for you to get common denominators (the number on the bottom of the fraction) so you can add the two fractions together. So for the first fraction (3/4) you will want to change the 4 to an 8 (because the second fraction is an 8). To do that you multipy 3/4 by 2/2. You can do that because 2/2 =1 and 1 times any number is always that number.

Multiply the numerators (numbers on the top) by the denominators (numbers on the bottom)

    (3/4) times (2/2) = (6/8)

Now, to add 6/8 to 1/8 you keep the denominators the same and add the numerators

    6+1=7

    So the answer is 7/8

Your son should fill in the blanks as 6,1,7 in that order

The point is that, in order to add or subtract fractions, you need a common denominator. IE, the bottom numbers must be equal.

    Now 3/4 = ?/8

    Well, 4*2 = 8, so 3*2 = ?

    So 3/4 = 6/8

Once the denominators (bottom numbers) are the same, simply add the numerators (top numbers), as follows:

    3/4 + 1/8

    = 6/8 + 1/8

    = 7/8

    I hope this helps!

    EDIT

    8/7 + 1/4

    = (8/7)(4/4) + (1/4)(7/7)

    = 32/28 + 7/28

    = 39/28

Hi the answer is 7/8. You have to double the bottom ‘4’ to make it an ‘8’ this will enable the calculation. To keep the calculation correct the top has to be multiplied by the same amount as the bottom.

    So the 3 becomes a 6 .

    ¾ +1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8

What you have to do is have both of the fractions have denominator of 8 so multiply 2/2 to the 3/4 and you get 6/8

    6/8 +1/8 = 7/8

    3/4 + 1/8

    = 6/8 + 1/8

    = 7/8

    3/4 + 1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8

You cannot add quarters to eighths so you need to convert the quarters into eighths.

To do this multiply top and bottom by 2. So 3/4 becomes 6/8, which is exactly the same value as 3/4 but expressed in eighths.

You now have 6/8 + 1/8 and since they are both expressed as eighths you can simply add them together to make7/8, which is the correct answer.

you need to change the numbers so you are working with the same sized fractions. i.e. everything needs to be changed into 8ths.

to change 3/4 into 8ths you have to double the 4, and what ever you do to the bottom part of the fraction, you have to do to the top. 3/4 is the same as 6/8.

    3/4+1/8 = 6/8+1/8 = 7/8

    3/4 + 1/8 = x/8 + y/8 + z/8

    6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8 right

so you can pick any values for x, y, and z such that x+y+z=7

    possibilities: x=1, y=2, z=4; x=2, y= 3, z=2; x=1, y=3, z=3; etc
