The fare rise will depend entirely on the route and rail company you are travelling with. Generally routes which have had the biggest investment in new trains and more frequent services will suffer the largest fare rises. The media loves to home in on the few routes where rises are 10% or higher, but remember many fares are regulated by the government and will only rise by 1% above the inflation rate, and that fares for quite a few journeys will not rise at all. The government is partly to blame for the size of fare rises, since the train operating companies in addition to paying tax on their profits must usually pay an annual 'premium payment' to the government too.

Its a shocker, but they do it every year, normally around New Year. They hike up the prices even though they don't do anything about the shitty services! If you get single tickets every day then you'll notice the price change even more - Zone 1 travelcards are likely to go up by £1 for a single journey. If you can, you're better off getting a seasonal travelcard, the prices will still go up but its more economical than paying everyday.
