Can pets and birds predict earthquakes?

At about 1 o clock this morning our cockatiels went crazy for five minutes and wouldn't stop chirping. It was only later when watching the news I saw that this was the exact time of todays UK earthquake. I didn't feel it, but our birds clearly did and knew something was up. Are animals really the first to know about things like this? Have there been any proper scientific studies. Any reliable links?

many animals have better adapted senses than humans as they rely on them much more than we do. During an earthquake we with our miserable senses only know about it once the whole place is shaking, but long before that there are other more subtle signs, ultra sound, some of the vibrations travel faster from the source but are not a violent so we don''t know about them, some times there are subtle shifts in magnetic field which we don't notice.

Also if you are close to the epicentre of the earthquake then there are electro static changes which some animals can sense, (as the rocks get stressed before the break electric charges can build up)

Also before the main break ther can be micro fractures which generate very tiny vibrations which some animals can sense. On top of that the micro fractures also allow trapped gasses to escape from the rocks, such as helium and radon, now don;t think animals can detect these, but there may be others that they can. So close to the epicentre, animals may be able to give warnings several hours before a major event, but most of us would not know what the animals were sensing and so ignore them and get ourselves killed anyway.

The suggestion of an obedience class is an excellent one. Read here https://tr.im/crAOY

It will help your dog learn to behave around other dogs, and help keep your training moving forward as you'll want to be prepared for the next class. Also, a good instructor can be a wonderful resource, someone to help you with any questions or concerns about your dog. Leash training can take a LOT of time and patience, depending upon the dog. I'm not sure what you mean by 'horrible on a leash' but my basic suggestion is that you take a lot of yummy treats with you on walks. When your dog behaves well on the leash (not pulling) praise her and give her treats. Change direction a lot so that she learns to pay attention to YOU and where you are going. It's also helpful to teach a "Watch Me" command such that whenever your dog looks at you you praise her and give her a treat. About chewing, yes a Kong is a great chew toy. Some dogs also like Nylabone brand bones. I suggest also teaching a "Leave It" command. You use this when she shows interest in chewing on something she shouldn't. Then immediately give her something she is allowed to chew, such as the Kong stuffed with somethig yummy. This same command will be helpful on walks when she wants to sniff or eat something she shouldn't. Again, when she does leave the item alone, be sure to give lots of praise. I would look into an obedience class right away. I think that you'll find that a good obedience class can help enormously! Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

Animals are sensitive to infra sound (too low pitched for humans to hear) and these can be heard through the air ahead of the ground vibrations. This link on infra sound has a section describing the behaviour of animals prior to earthquakes.

During the tsunami a load of elephants ran for the high ground, and inadvertantly saved the lives of the tourists on them, and the owners that chased them.

I believe they have a sixth sense. One recent example was the few animals who died during the Tsunami those couple of years back. Many animals headed to much higher ground a few hours before the disaster. This was a proven fact. Google Tsunami, follow links and read reviews on this subject alone.

My budgie fell off his perch a short time before an earthquake occurred around Peterborough in 2002. I heard him fall off his perch and then a few seconds later I heard a rumbling through the house. He has never fallen off his perch before or after - weird, eh?
