If you want to convert that into horsepower, use this formula. Hp=T X rpm / 5252 I'm sure there's a metric formula, but I don't know it. However, to convert newton meters into foot pounds, use nm X 7.233= ft lbs. To convert horsepower into torque, use T = hp X 5252 / rpm In this case, 51 ft lbs equals 41.75hp @ 4300 rpm. That doesn't mean that's the maximum hp, but the torque peak. The torque peak is where the engine make the most hp with the fewest rpms. The torque peak is also where the least amount of fuel is consumed for the amount of horsepower produced. A lot of the bigger Harleys have peak horsepower produced at 5k or so Long stroke V twins like Harley and the big Jap bikes usually don't rev very high compared to short stroke, 4 cylinder engine because of the high reciprocating mass. As a result, their torque peak is going to be much lower than some sport bike, many of which have the torque peak at 7,000-8,000 rpm. In the past, many European countries had horsepower limits, namely France, Germany and Switzerland. I would imagine if there is any difference in hp between the US and Aussie version, it would be minor and the result of differeing emission or noise regulations. ADDITIONAL For the confused mechanic, torque is merely twisting motion and engines don't produce horsepower, they produce torque. Hook an engine up to a dynamometer and the dyno measures torque, not hp. To get the horsepower, the above formula is used. One other thing, torque numbers mean nothing without knowing the rpm they're produced at. 50 ft lbs @ 2000 rpm = 19 hp. 50 ft lbs @ 4,000 rpm = 38 hp. 25 ft lbs @ 8,000 rpm = 38 hp. Torque peaks with many of the high performance engines are typically at around 75% of rated rpms. Engines like Harley have a very flat torque curve and while the peak may be at around 50% of rated rpms, usually there is hardly anything that resembles a "peak". That's what makes them so tractible and well mannered when producing power.

    Use this site:

    http://www.onlineconversion.com/torque.htm

It is foot*pound, not ft/lb as it is newton*meter.
