Is it true to the USA was declared Secular in 1797?

Read something that said it was, sign by Washington and Adams and that it could not declare itself a nation of any faith, or start war on the basis of religion.

Update:

so what would the consequences of the US starting a religious war be?

Update 2:

Is the war on terror , not really a cover for Bush's war on Islam?

The US was not founded to be a christian country, or to have any other religion enshrined in our government, it was founded as a secular state (though not all of those who helped pen the constitution felt that way). The constitution does not make any mention of god at all.

I don't know why you see right wing evangelists saying with a straight face that the US was intended to be a christian nation, I have never seen any of them show any evidence of the founding fathers' intentions in this regard.

The document you're referring to is the Treaty with Tripoli, which was written by Washington and signed by Adams, and it does explicitly state that the US is not a christian country, you can look it up, just google the treaty, I believe the language in question is in article 11.

It is essentially written in the Constitution, so this is true even earlier than 1797. If you read the letters of Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, Washington, Hamilton and the other founding fathers, it is clearly there that they always wanted a separation of Church and State and the avoidance of a theocracy.

The US has always been a secular nation. That is why we have separation of church and state. Why and with whom would the US start a religious war?

Negative on that one, you mis-read. God has been at the centre of things from the start in America, and rightly so.
