What makes joints crack?

What is it that actually makes the creaking/cracking noise?

When I get up from kneeling my knees kind of creak... is it the cartilage making the noise, or the bone, or what? Do different times of noises indicate different problems?

i became into constantly informed that the noise is air bubbles escaping from the joints. i'm specific it fairly is that regularly, yet often it appears like a joint popping back into place. So i'm no longer in all probability specific, yet it fairly is my 2 cents :P

I was always told that the noise is air bubbles escaping from the joints. I'm sure it's that sometimes, but often it feels like a joint popping back into place. So I'm not really sure, but that's my two cents :P
