canon eos 40D digital Rebel xti ?

I can't seem to get my canon ef-s 18-55mm II to work all the time. Sometimes it will allow me to take a picture and other times it won't.

I must confess I'm new to digital photography.

first of all i dont think you have the camera type rite . there is a rebel and a 40d. 2 different cameras. the rebel goes for about 700. and the 40d for about 1200. make sure the lens is attached corectly and it is set to automatic not manual. my guess it it is not on the automatic setting(not just the camera's spin dial but the lens's little switch to automatic. also you might need more light.

Try cleaning the contact points on the lens and body. Also make sure you are using fresh batteries. Confirm that it has a focus lock before fully pressing the shutter button. Read the manual :)
