Bissell, I've got the Proheat 2X. But I live in the US so I'm not sure if Bissell's in the UK. You can always order stuff online.

Hi little weed: I have a Bissell proheat. big, heavy but does a very good job on the carpets. You can pick one up for around £150 or less. I also have a Polti Steamer as well, which is great for steaming the floors, curtains (we have cotton velvet and it fetches them up well), and the grout on the tiles in the bathroom, but does not clean the carpet like the Bissell. I do't know what the large Polti costs now as I bought mine some years ago. Have you got a pal you can loan from to see which you prefer.

Strange as it may seem I own a vax and the reason being my carpet's a very light colour. It does a pretty good job and even sucks up spills in seconds. I think it cost about £150 when I bought it a couple of years ago and I can't see them being much different now.

Yes those carpet cleaning machines work wonders...I bought one last yr and use it ALL of the time the solution cost like 15 20 bucks but it does the whole house...So id NEVER go back to just a quickie job on carpets again..The investment could save u lots of money in the long run
