Experience with silent reflux in infants.?

Hello all

My little boy has never been a good sleeper. When he was born he would sleep four hours straight - now at 8 months he rarely does that. We are lucky to get three straight hours. Consequently due to my absolute exhaustion we have now begun co-sleeping. Even then, he is lucky to do three hours at a stretch.

Last night we had a terrible night with our little one screaming for a couple of hours. He would feed a little and then scream. Finally my hubby and I took turns at walking him around the house which quietened him until he went back to bed and then scream again. I even put him in the car at 4.00am with the intention of going to the urgent doctors who were closed. I did not think it was bad enough for the ER so went home. He fell asleep in the car and was okay until about 7.30am and when he got up he was all smiles. I took him to the doctor today who says he looks perfectly healthy - he looked over him throughly felt for hernias and checked for ear infections and nothing there. We summised it might have been a tummy ache as LO was farting a lot.

Anyway, I got to thinking and maybe he has a silent reflux which is getting worse - maybe he has always had it and that is why he has never slept well except for one or two occasions?

Anyone had experience with silent reflux and do you think it is possible for it to go undiagnosed for 8 whole months???

Thanks - love to hear any stories.

my 3 month old has sevier reflux and we just found out about it last week when he actually went unconscious because of the pain. He was a bad sleeper too, but now that we have medicine for him, he sleeps 6 hours straight at night. If my son has it this bad and we didn't know it for 3 months, i think it's possible for your son to have a case bad enough to interrupt his sleep for 8 months without being diagnosed. The dr. suggested for us to put books under his mattress to help him sleep at an angle. This helps keep everything in his tummy instead of coming up. Maybe it will help your LO as well. Good luck!

I've never heard of silent reflux but my son had reflux while never actually spitting up. We're very fortunate to have a pediatrician who has been practicing about 40 years and can spot acid reflux right away. My son was sent for an upper GI (xray of esophagus) when he was a couple months old and was prescribed zantac for AR (acid reflux). The acidic stomach fluid was coming up into his esophagus then going right back to his stomach. That caused ulcers in his esophagus that were VERY painful. Once we started him on zantac he became a very happy baby and started sleeping!

If I were you I'd demand a referral for an upper GI (very easy to perform with babies and is just an xray) or I'd ask to experiment with zantac or prevacid to see if it works. If your baby has AR it can be a life changing experience when you find medication works! Also, try adding rice cereal to your formula. The rice thickens the formula and helps the baby keep it in his stomach. Good luck!

My daughter suffered with a reflux problem at about 6 weeks old. Problem stems from an weak reflux valve that allows acidic stomach contents to come back through what should be a one way valve. You do need to speak to a doctor , but In our case mixing and heating cornflower into milk feed thickened the milk sufficiently enought to keep it down. Lasted about 6 months though and was very inconvenient to mix and make! One other thing I remember is that trying to prop your son upright can help relieve the symptoms - i.e. milk is less likely to come back up. Hope this makes sense! Best of luck

My son had silent reflux, he had a pack (or part pack) of gaviscon with every bottle. Two things to try, ask the doctor about gaviscon for him to try on, and second, have a go at letting him sleep sitting up, put him in his car seat and buckle up for his nap. Sleeping with his head raised will usually prevent the reflux. My son slept well in his swing seat after feeds when he was little.

The good news is, at his age it's almost over with. Once they start eating real food, it almost always goes away.

    hello,

I think this site will help you:

    http://www.mwent.com/Pages/PatientServices/633.htm...

    they suggest specific tests.

one more thing: if you have doubts about a specific problem you should tell that to your doctor and this way he will know what tests to run.

I hope your baby wil be just fine.

    take care of him.
