getting my microphone to work in Windows XP?

This is on a computer not connected to the internet. It is not detecting input from my mics, though I have tested the soundcard and the mics, and checked all my settings, all seems OK. Is there anything I can download (legal only please!) to try to get it to detect the mic?

Update:

in response to first comment, what is an under audio? I couldnt find anything like that.

go into your `control panel' then select sound devices. then select which is your under audio and apply , this is the path that is set wrong , unless your mic needs a seperate installation disc ( by the way you havent mentioned what device you are using though , this shouldnt realy matter unless you have a special mic) good luck , have a play

    like Mellowfellow says...i think...

First make sure your "Mic" is plugged into the Mic jack and not the "Line in" jack.

If that didn't fix the problem then do the following:

Open Control Panel, click "Sounds and Audio Devices". On the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window click on the "Audio" tab. Under "Sound recording" click on the "Volume" button. This opens your "Recording Control" window. Check to make sure your Microphone is selected.

If all else fails, try uninstalling and re-installing your sound driver. Good luck
