Housing costs in USA?

Thinking of moving to southern California, perhaps renting for a year initially. I need to budget so was wondering if someone has some typical expenses for a 2-3 bed apartment with air con, cable TV, internet. Any other typical costs would be appreciated (eg local taxes, electricity, gas, water, garbage collection fees, etc). Thanks.

Update:

Not interested in property prices/rents, thanks (plenty of websites for that). Most interested in "hidden" costs - nobody has mentioned any taxes: surely there are some?

California is one of the most expensive states to live in. A decent 2 bedroom apartment in a decent/safe area will be at least $1,000 a month probably more. Just to give you a general idea.

Other states, that are not near the ocean like Missouri for example you can get an apartment twice as big for half the price.

Like the other person said- cable & internet is about $100 a month and electricity depends how much you use but about 50-150 a month.

The best answer for you is to contact banks in the area you wish to move to and check out any property closings, (foreclouser)

There are some real deals on property as folks over bought and over paid the property values have dumped so there are some real deals.

I've included a page with listings for the San Diego area.

Keep in mind as far as buying properies DON'T BE AFRAID TO MAKE A LOW PRICE OFFER right now it's a buyers market in most of California.

    Prices vary greatly by community.

Typically with an apartment, you will pay first & last months rent + security deposit to move in. You will have to pay for your own cable TV, Internet, telephone and probably electricity, other utilities will be included.

You can get cable TV + Internet + telephone together for ~$100/month (unlimited calling) through cable TV providers (Comcast for example).

    Electricity....I'd budget $100/month?

Look on craigslist.org for prices of rental properties in the communities your thinking about.

Hostel? Are there hostels in the USA? Anyway...California, New York, Masachusetts, District of Columbia are expensive. Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona cost less. You can probably eat fairly well for about $10 per day.
