it was the christmas after my dad left. we had no money, and had to have sandwiches for xmas dinner. there was no tree. but the worst part was seeing my mother so unhappy, and so upset that she couldn't afford a proper xmas for me and my sister. it's taught me not to give a stuff about material things - just having my family with me is all i want on xmas day.

Christmas 2008 was tougher than the others due to my mom passing away from cancer. It was a long road for her and she was quite old and suffering from dementia, but that still never makes it ok.

But she was a terrific Christmas person so we did our best to keep her traditions and her memories and it worked out fine.

I was in high school, I think as a sophomore or junior. My (now ex-) step father was out of work and with 5 kids in the house things were pretty thin. We went to my grandparents' for lunch and other festivities and naturally hadn't been able to participate in the annual "exchanging of names" thing with my cousins and aunts/uncles. So there we sat while a couple of my cousin's passed out gifts to everyone else. They were almost done when one of them got caught by one of my aunts. The rest of the family had agreed to go ahead and get something for us, but my cousin's were putting those gifts back down behind the tree instead of passing them to us.

the christmas my mother died. or the one i broke my ribs, collar bone front teeth in a car accident my family all left town for thee day over christmas i was home alone unable move out of my own vomit. just laying in bed in pain.
