Single Licence iWork installs on more then one mac!?

Hi I recently bought a new iMac and installed a single license iWork 09 on my new computer. However the iWork I used had been installed on my Macbook and now works on both! I wondered a) is this legal b) is it just a malfunction c) why now won't it let me open any previously saved documents from my memory stick like a file called "Berlin walk one" it comes up with an error message saying "The document “Email.docx” couldn’t be opened" ?

Update:

Just to add the files and documents DO open on my macbook

NO, this is NOT LEGAL. a single license means meant to be on only one computer. I don't know if Macs have a license key, but a lot of software with single licensing can be installed twice like World of Warcraft and Office. Also, the iWork'09 is a new version of the software. The other docs u tried to open were of an older version, so of course it's not going to work. you must run some sort of compatibility mode between the two versions, which i do not know how to do because i don't own a Mac. If you still have the old software i suggest you install it on your Macbook again.

That is not legal. It is possible that it might get disabled.

Also .docx is a new Microsoft word format that was introduced in MIcrosoft word 2007, it is not supported with iWork. iWork can only works with the old microsoft word format that was used in Microsoft Word 2003 or below.
