Is it illegal to convert DVDs and watch them on your iphone?
There is a package called roxio popcorn for sale on the apple store that allows you to convert DVDs to watch on your ipod/iphone etc
...but I thought this was illegal?
Surely if its for sale on the apple store it must be ok..

Yes, but it's a fuzzy grey area legally, put this way I went to the apple store and talked with a sales person there, about the same topic and he danced around making factual statements, but hinted yes it can be done, but illegally, cause he could get in trouble for telling customers this, should some moron decide to rat on him.

It's a gray area. The DMCA prohibits "cracking" the encryption used on DVD's, but there are many DVD's that are not encrypted that would be legal to convert.
But, if you are using it strictly for your personal use and will not be giving the converted video away, no one is going to come bashing your door down to arrest you, and it is very, very unlikely anyone is going to sue you over it.

If you paid for both products, then yes. Apple makes money when you buy the program.
