Can garage charge diagnostic fee for car under warranty?

Car broke down last week, the AA came and did some tests and discovered that while the battery was fine, the alternator was not providing enough current or whatever to charge the battery. I took the car back to the garage (main dealer, but second hand and under warranty - 06 plate) and they stated that they would charge a diagnostic fee - even though it's under warranty. Now, since the AA have told them what's wrong with it (I gave them the AA report with the figures recorded by their test equipment), are the garage justified in charging me for this diagnostic fee?

If they are NOT justified, can you point me to a specific piece of legislation to wave at them? (UK/English law)

Thanks.

Update:

Eve said "you absolutely cannot"

What is that supposed to mean?

Update 2:

Thanks Chow and anon - makes sense.

I've since been told that the particular type of alternator I need is on back order and won't be in until at least 7th Jan (been in since 29th Dec). It's for a Ford Focus C-MAX - can't be that uncommon surely? Or has there been a run on them lately...

Hi geoff, The report from the AA does not have significance or obligate on what the dealer is charging, the dealer will conduct their own diagnostic regardless on who has previously worked on the unit, this is a normal and appropriate procedure. the AA report is only useful to you in determining the accuracy of the dealer diagnostic. Warranty provision vary by make and model, and manufacture. You should consult your specific warranty provision to see if labor is chargeable under the terms of your warranty on your specific vehicle. I hope this information is useful to you...good luck.

If a car is covered by a warranty, then like any other item bought the warranty has to be honered. If you buy a computer say and if fails after three weeks you take it back they ether repair it or change it, they do not charge for the repair, unless the seal or the cover has been removed. If the car has been tampered with in anyway and they can prove it, ie the car has been driven recklessly or something like and a part has failed because of the way it was driven then yes they can charge otherwise they must repair the car without charge.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pchealthcleaner.net/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

they will not charge you if the car is fixed under warranty, the fee only applies if they cannot find anything wrong or there is damage, (rats chewing through wire or crash damage or something) warranty wont cover the job and you do not want to pay for the repair. it is just to make sure they are not spending time on your car for nothing. if there is something wrong with your alternator and it's covered by warranty. they will NOT charge you a diagnosis fee.

Google EU warranty law. Here in Canada, this is illegal but it does happen. Labour is supposed charged back to the warranty holder. I believe the same is true in the US. Is your warranty held by the manufacturer or by the seller/dealer?

sure since maintaince have little to do with it warranty covers parts that might break doesnt have anything to do with checking it or even replacing it sometimes

battery oil change spark plugs brake noraml wear not covered or is the checking of motor falls apart covered transmission stop working covered

    bad battery not covered

aa could have check it free

(auto zone) a Parts store can check it free

most any shop in town can check it free

its a battery check most places thats free

but still neither one is covered under a warranty

replacing it wil cost you checking it should have been free.. could have had that done most anywhere free they was wrong but hey thats what they charge you took it to them thats fair you dont work for free do you
