Supermarket scam or my imagination ?
About a month ago I bought some Tesco salmon fish cakes. They were very nice with chunks of salmon. They were good the second and third time but today they were mostly potato and I would imagine that the ingredients had been altered to match the contents. I have noticed this on a number of products. They are good when launched and then downgraded into, well, crap !
Does anyone know if this goes on? Maxwell house coffee was new and improved and tastes like dishwater now. In my opinion.

All supermarkets rely on their customers not asking questions, and being too lazy to look for alternatives. If you want decent fish-cakes - go to your local fishmonger.
Seriously, next time you go shopping, look at the labels of say any meat/chicken etc.
pies, kievs, steak and kidney, escallops etc..
Then check the weight of meat in the pies etc. . they can be anywhere between 12% to 48%. So what is the rest made up of.?
Have you ever heard of reformed meat ? usually ham etc.. that is meat that has been steamed, then scrapped off bones, mashed up together, then formed into patties etc.. tasty isn't it.
that is why I don't use supermarkets, they will dictate what you buy simply by having it available or not, when it comes to real food, can't beat home made.

All the major supermarkets constantly change the content and portion sizes of their own brand product. They do this for a number of reasons to keep a product a particular price point and to maintain or increase their profit margins as the cost of ingredients rises or falls. The composition of the product will also change whenever they switch suppliers.
This applies across all product categories from ready meals to washing machine powder.
Concerning Salmon fishcakes in particular - as Tesco have committed themselves to a two packs for £2 long term price offer, it is possible that they have reduced the Salmon content - Salmon prices are going up, so they may well have cut the amount of fish in the product to compensate for that. The only way of knowing that for certain would be to check the percentage contents list on the packaging.

First of all I think you are wrong to name names, but having worked for the supermarket in question i can tell you that the foods baring the supermarket names are NOT made by them.
They are made by different businesses and the labels are then put on to match the company that requires them.
You talk about salmon fishcakes and what you describe as being great in the initial promotions is often created to sell more. Then the ingredients are altered to make more money.
The thing to do is to make your complaints to the company in question. Take photos and a copy of the letter and sent it to head office.
As for the coffee i would address the same remedy.
Marks & Spencers used to demand certain ingredients for their fruit buns and the fruit had to be a certain quality and brand. Unfortunately they are no longer around. And Mr Cowan died in 1979 but TESCO's has gone on to become the number 1 supermarket in the UK over Sainsbury's

Do you know i have never really noticed or took the said "pepsi challenge" on certain brand names and its rivals, its a very interesting point and a worrying consumer product satisfaction. I think you should actually contact the makers of said salmon fishcakes and maxwell house and get an honest unbiased opinion! which we know wont happen but its certainly worth a which report investigation, i mean what is the point of making something that you actually like to then be let down by meer profit making margins to make more, content less...am i being too anal here? either way we make their money lets not make them feel they can feed us with well...crap ha! if anything that is a best answer haha!

You should write to tesco and complain . Sometimes Tesco or any of the supermarkets will change to supplier and it could be that this is the reason . If you dop not complain then there is no chance of the issue being looked at by Tesco . As for Maxwell House I much prefer Nescafe anyway

this is happening not just to fishcakes but to all sorts of products too you get less and pay more it is price increases by stealth as for maxwell house do not like it at all and do not eat the fish cakes but if you just look at products that you do buy be that biscuit chocolate crisps etc you will notice that the quantity is being reduced but the price is not and in a lot of cases increased as for the pillock insulting you for buying fishcakes and instant coffee ignore him for the buffoon that he clearly is perhaps he has a thing about hedgehogs and shopping at tesco oh well i supose thats up to him but i like to shop at tesco too i prefere waitrose but none where i live

Its definitely not your imagination take the Mc Donalds parfait for instance when that first came out ir was a Giant cup like a large soft drink cup full of fruit and yogurt and crunchy oats for sprinkling on top. Now you order a parfait at and its a very small cup with hardly any fruit just yogurt and half the time they don't give you the granola for the topping. So no you are not imagining things

Many manufacturers have cut down on quantity and quality to keep the prices down. And sometimes they raise the prices also. Maximize profits and minimize product. Thats the normal trend. I was at the Olive Garden two weeks ago sand saw they were making their portions smaller also but had the same prices as when the portions were larger

I know that I used to get 5 pounds of sugar for the same price that I now get 4 pounds. Maybe also, your taste could be changing, but I think they are trying to save any way they can with the ingredients.

they might be old because they are from about a month ago and "salmon fish cakes" may get old after a couple weeks, but that is what i would think.
