Can anybody recommend a good general contractor?

I have a very small bathroom that I need renovating (replace toilet, vanity, shower & flooring). I have had nearly half a dozen quotes so far but they are all ridiculous. Most are about double what the job should cost (labour only). Can anybody recommend somebody that wont try and take me for a ride? I am located near Pearson airport in Toronto.

First, just so you know what a General Contractor is, they are a company/person that really doesn't do any of the work...they sub-contract to other smaller companies that specialize in different areas. Don't expect a GC to come in any less than a Remodeling Company. For example, I'm in Atlanta, GA, and don't have an answer for you, but as a Remodeling/Home Improvement Company (and while we do operate a lot of the same way, we really don't consider ourselves a GC), but I may have a suggestion.

Almost everyone looks at labor costs and goes into shock. Look at your estimates. Compare them line by line and see what the differences are. If your estimates are all pretty close, then it's your expectations that might need adjusting.

If I was doing your job, we would have several different crews/teams working there. First, a real plumber, not a handy man, for the toilet and the shower & vanity pipework. A flooring team would do the floor...and I might use a different person for tile work than for wood, etc., work...some times one does a better job on one than the other. I would have a paint crew doing that work and another for any wall work.

Believe it or not, you do get what you pay for a lot of times...make sure the guy you pick has insurance (we provide a copy of our policy to each of our customers). If you don't think that's important, just hope a workman doesn't slip on your tub and get hurt...you'll see them in court when they sue you. Does the company/person have a real business license...are they using good materials? We use paint in most cases that has an MSRP of around $40 per gallon while some of our competition uses the stuff that's a 5 gallon tub for less than $40...which do you think will hold up better?

Make sure you compare apples to apples. Ask about any major differences in labor costs...why does your estimate say 40 hours and another company's is 30 hours? If most of your estimates are in the same time frame, and their labor cost per hour is around the same, and someone comes in a lot less...then they're "low balling" you...be careful with that person. FYI, we do work for a lot of GC companies.

Good luck and enjoy your new bathroom.
