Help with redundancy?

I am 8 months pregnant and we found out recently that my fiance is going to be made redundant. His employer has said that he will keep my partner on until i go into labour, then give him his 2 weeks paternity leave and then make him redundant. He will nly get 3 weeks redundancy pay, does he pay tax on this money? Also, my partner would like to retrain as an hgv driver once he has been made redundant, is there any way he would be able to get help paying for this? Thanks for any help x

yes it is taxable and taxes are going up thanks to our friend Obama letting the Bush tax cuts expire.

Plus the new health care/job killing bill has all large employers nervous so no one is hiring.

ATT says new health care plan will cost them $1 billion...think they'll be hiring soon?

The fools in washington are spending money so fast that your unborn child is already in debt. for 10 of thousands of dollars.

he probably won't be able t get any gubmint assistance with retraining unless he is a minority.

Sorry but that's they way this hope and changes works .

    Remember on election day.

ok not sure about help for training however I would suggest he try something else ....

Pay has fallen in this sector dramatically over the last 2 years and unfortunately there are many good drivers still waiting for work ..

Costs for training and passing will cost approx 2 to 3 k and even more if he needs 7.5tn license first ...once past he will struggle to find work as most company's will only take drivers with 2 years experience so that leaves one or two agencies ..work will be irregular and at weekends and nights ...seeing as you have a new baby once he is trained and working they will be long days and possible a week or so away from you both ......save his money and earn more behind a bar or retrain into something else which is more suitable for your needs

Redundancy pay is not taxable although any pay in lieu of notice is (although I wouldn't have thought he would have any of that since the employer seems to be keeping him on longer than necessary as a gesture of goodwill). There is no financial help for HGV training I'm afraid. The job centre will provide certain types of training (eg basic IT skills) but nothing like that.
