Swiss-American misunderstanding?

In Switzerland we have hundreds of different sorts and types of cheese. Why is it that the Americans on here mostly seem to know and refer to 'Swiss cheese' only? What kind of cheese is this 'Swiss cheese' anyway?

    American "Swiss Cheese" is the american version of Emmental but with less flavour

    light cheese with holes in it is usually called "swiss cheese" You can see it in most Tom and Jerry cartoons! hope this helps

    Square, white colored, and it looks like a mouse has eaten holes out of it. . there are diff types. . laced, aged, etc. . all I know is that it is YUMMY :)
