I usually try to make a list of possible behaviors and outcomes I expect to see during my observations. For example, while observing during silent reading time: 1. Is the child engaged in the story? 2. Is the child mouthing the words as she reads? 3. Are the child's eyes moving over the sentences in a fluid motion or are their eyes moving back and forth too quickly? 4. Do they use their finger to follow the flow of sentences? 5. Are their facial expressions more relaxed or are there signs of frustration? and so on...

Just remember what the goals are that you want your children to achieve and what behaviors associated to those goals you expect to see and then build from there. Don't get me wrong, though, there are going to be surprises.

    Hope this helps, good luck!
