I cannot load Internet Explorer 8?

I run XP and have Firefox browser. I have tried to load IE 8. Firefox gets turned off during the download,my Norton Antivirus allows the download. Right at the end of the download I get a box on the screen saying "Application failed to initialize because windows is shutting down" My PC shuts down and then restarts without completing the download. I have tried several times without success. I have not turned the Antivirus off as there has been no instruction to during the download.Any ideas please ?

    had a similar(ish) issue, was because i did not have windows genuine advantage installed. once i installed this it was fine.

    You using a genuine copy of windows?>
