OLD FILM.................................?

There are a couple living in a old Mansion which has a portrait of the same mansion and drive on the living room wall...

They notice a dark ghostly figure in a long black monks habit has appeared in the Painting.. and it starts moving nearer to the front door, at the end of the film, they look at the painting, and the 'figure' is on the doorstep, and they hear knocking at thier own real front door....

it was shown (i think) on Ch4 England in the early eighties.

That's kind of familiar but I feel like I remember reading it rather than watching it... an M.R.James story maybe?

    *runs downstairs for book*

...an M.R. James story called The Mezzotint - maybe Googling for that will get you the name of the film :-)

Here is the story being read by Robert Powell:

Sounds like an episode of the Night Gallery series..titled "The Cemetary", and stars a superb Roddy McDowall as a devilish young man called Jeremy Evans who has latched on to his previously unknown wealthy uncle. To hasten the time when he will recieve the old man's inheritance Jeremy deliberatly exposes him to cold winds upon which the old man dies of pheumonia. However Jeremy finds that life is not all plain sailing now as a mysterious painting on the staircase keeps changing and shows his uncle slowly rising from the dead in the nearby family graveyard. Slowly driven to insanity by the thought of his uncle coming after him from the grave Jeremy falls down the stairs in terror and breaks his neck upon which the real twist in the story reveals itself. But is that really the end of the story?
