Computer viruses are not like human viruses such as the flu which just disappears again. Computer viruses are nothing more than software, except that instead of being useful, they are malicious and are for example programmed to steal personal information, corrupt your files, et cetera. Computer viruses do not leave therefore, but need to be removed. Scan your computer using an anti-virus solution such as ESET NOD32 (paid) or Microsoft Security Essentials (free of charge) for example.

It might have done everything it was programmed to do and has now stopped. Or it may be sitting waiting until time for it to activate again. But it won't be gone.

What it was supposed to do might have been send a copy of itself to other people via email...

Scan with Malwarebytes and see what shows up:

If it were programmed to, a virus could destroy itself after its tasks were done.

However, the Virus-Writer [*Bleep!*]ards are not usually so considerate.

What if every virus writer wrote their viruses like that?

no, your computer is infected by trojan. You can scan your computer by bitdefender online scanner, it's free. You can use avast free or MSE. Also the newest, AVG free 2011
