Hand cramps while writing?

I get a hand cramp pretty much every time i write for more than 2 minutes, with me being in Year 11 that's not really helpful with generally more written work. Does anyone know of any good ways to prevent hand cramps while writing? If i hold my pen differently i will write slower and less neat. (not good handwriting to begin with either) I also play Xbox quite a bit so could it to be with holding a controller for a while? I never get it while playing though, only writing.

Thanks

Anthony

Update:

Also, since christmas i have been playing less controller based games and more Kinect, the new motion controller. I had aches for a few days because i wasn't used to that but generally, before the christmas holidays i was fine but played more controller games.

That may have a great deal to do with it, that of holding a controller [consistently in one position] for a while. The writing involves other muscle configurations, though different enough that you are now made aware that the muscles used to play XBox are not compatible with those used to write. See?

There is another aspect: you may not being drinking enough water; further, you may be too sendentary; what, with all that sitting and not moving arms and shoulders for long periods.

Any one part of the neuro-muscular network is aligned with all the others. Your condition may at first be a simple one. You are 'burning' yourself, which is to say that you are causing imbalances.

And so -- back off from the XBox routine! You are doing it too much, and your body is sending you warning signals. Many people have developed conditions such as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome from having typed and sat and doing repetitive motions for too long a period. And what at first may have been simple later becomes an actual medical condition.

I had this problem for the longest, i cant even remember how long, maybe since i started writing period. i had the same question myself and so i did my little research. I also always used to type in my own incorrect way thinking it wasn't a big deal, but i thankfully found out later in fact it was! Typing, in case this is also an issue you are unaware of, in fact increases hand cramps. Anyway, back to cramps from writing i found a few pointers that should work for just about anyone. First of all you want to take a break and don't push your self, make yourself a paste and a limit. Try not to worry about perfection, i remember i used to be obsessed with getting the neatest writing out there. If you really are one of those people that absolutely has to write neat by all means do it, but relax! Your hand should be loose moving with your arm for more comfort. When you write, write with a loose grip, try to hold the paper in place with another hand so you don't have to worry about pressing down hard. All of these thing about hand and arm movement with positioning are important and make a difference. Sitting up more erected wouldn't hurt, if you set your spine straight that allows more oxygen to the brain which is always good. Stretch your fingers and hands! Take short notes! Try using more complex words that make a sentence shorted so not much had to be written. I have become Obsessed with ZEBRA pens!!! Choosing a pen that best fits your hand and has a flexible more tolerable movement is important. I recommend STAPLES to go buy these pens when ever you are headed that way. Don;t forget to try the pens out before you buy them. i also find listening to music helpful, you should give that a try if possible. Having a little snack to distract your hand from the pen is definitely my most favorite part of this tip. I used to snack on chips but you know what, writing is the perfect time to just keep up with your healthy snaking. A fruit salad, some grapes, almonds, or carrots and celery's. I took the liberty of putting the Zebra site in case you are interested.
