Respiratory System Measurement Help?

My girlfriend is at college doing a forensic science course and is stuck on a question about measuring Vital Capacity. Her class took readings for Peak Flow, Height, Gender and Spirometer results for sitting, standing and laying. The question asks her to find the Vital Capacity but we can't find a calculation for the Vital Capacity other than to add the IRV, ERV and TV but we have no idea how to measure them, we have both been searching for the last hour also and can't find anything. Is it possible to measure the Vital Capacity using the information her class collected and if not could someone explain how to calculate IRV, ERV and TV. Please help us as it would mean allot. Thank you

First step, isolate what your trying to find. You need to find the IRV so isolate that. Your new equation is VC-TV-ERV=IRV. Then you just substitute in the numbers you have. You don't need to convert anything because they are all in the same measurement (all in liters). You end up having 5.95L-2.75L-4.75L=IRV. Do the subtracting and you get -1.55L
