Fast external drive for iMac?
I edit HD video and find my fw800 7200rpm drive lags a little on occassion, and as such am looking for a faster solution:
Can an ethernet connection be used, as these seem to promise much faster transfer?
If I get an ethernet enclosure can I install an SSD drive to really ramp up the speed?
FW800 and USB 2 are the fastest device connections on my iMac, is there an ethernet / SSD option?

1 - yes, it is called network attached storage
example: apple Time-Capsule
but there are many more.
2 - yes, if a regular drive fits, an ssd drive should fit as well
