Where can I find information about squatter's rights ?

I have for some time now been a 'tolerated trespasser'.

That is a legal way of saying a squatter, who pays rent.

My landlord has now decided to evict me & I have already been served with a Notice of Eviction & have to be out by 11th October.

I was wondering where would be the best place to go for advice.

If you know of any links, to site which could offer advice or support, then I would be very grateful

I am NOT asking for your opinion of my situation.

Nor for your opinion of squatters.

Get your hands on the ‘Squatters Handbook’. I can’t remember who produces it. It used to be somewhere in Whitechapel.

If you are paying rent then you should contact your local housing advice service with the Council.

You would have at least a deemed licence to be on the property - probably you shpuld have been given a tenancy agreement.

Also you might be interested in the letter that appeared in the Independent a couple of days a go -

Seen how you're not asking for opinion on squatters, i mays well not mention i think they r PC loving tramps, nor should I mention that I am confused as to how you have the internet.

However, on a true personal opinion, squatters rights is something I have always looked at as stupid. Why should someone have the right to live in your building just because the door was open. Maybe I'm just right wing which I'm sure lefties will demonstrate by the thumbs down button.

  • Usually about 7 or half seven walk the streets check houses that there are no lights next day if the same building looks empty check the bins for food or general rubbish if you think you have found a place keep an eye on it check regularly if possible everyday.

Only if you know this building is empty then you should look for open windows (most estate agents have usually closed all windows) try around the back you have to be carefull early in the morning is a good time try the back doors and windows if you have no luck you have two options and 1 of these options only work in City's

Option 1 the putty around the window needs to be removed (I understand there are modern houses with Plastic frames) you can usually get at the latch with a normal butter knife through the black rubber around the window if its a wooden frame take the putty of and pull the nails back holding in the pane of glass the window pane will then fall into your hands enter building the first thing you should do is change the front door lock(you have to be prepared look at it like a mission ) once a new lock is on open the back door and put the window pane back into the frame and bend the nails back to hold it in

Option 2 (only for city dwellers) its a simple idea if the option 1 does not work wait till you hear a Police car passing and just as it gets past where you are brick through the window (Sirens need to be on) when I First did this I Thought I would have to wait for ages for a cop car with its Sirens on it took just 3 mins. needs to be noted this will cost you a pane of glass but sometimes it is the only way to get into an un occupied building once in do the same as above.

That's it you are Squatting and you have not broke the law if you wish you can get a copy of section 6 to stick on the window all estate agents and Police know what section 6 means and you can put you feet up and relax.

Just 1 more thing the building needs to be occupied at all times just in case the owner boards the whole place up while you are out one time the police knocked on the door claiming we were stealing the Electricity from our neighbours and they locked us up for a couple of hours fortunately our friend was on the corner and waited till the police left and occupied the building and when the boarders came to make the building look like a derelict building. he popped his head out of the upstairs building and they could not board it up.
