Have you ever appealed an eviction notice ?

I'm about to appeal an eviction notice & I wondered exactly what would be happening in the court.

Does anyone have to give evidence, like in a criminal case ?
Do I get a chance to speak at all ?

The judge will invite you to make a statement and will probably question you to illicit the facts. Take all relevant documentation with you. The reason for the eviction is crucial, since under the shorthold rules the court has no option other than to grant repossession. For example if you are behind with the rent, or the term of the tenancy has expired he will have to grant the order. If the landlord has made a mistake with the notice or the term is not expired it is a different matter. If the judgement does go against you, ask for time to find somewhere else. The judge can postpone the repossession date by a few weeks if he sees fit. Good luck.
