My Mac won't boot up?

When i go to turn my iMac on it flashes with between the Apple logo, a file with a quedtion mark on it and a kind of 'no entry' sign. I'm running OSX 10,4.???? Can anyone help me please?

    You have a screwed OS or a screwed hard drive. You'll need a copy of 10.4 to find out.

    you can try contacting apple care and see if that works
