Motorcycle Category A license (UK)?

I am currently 16 and I have passed my CBT, I just want to know information about the Category A license.

Do I have to take both parts of the Category A license (A1 and A2)?

Is the theory test apart of it or do I have to book that separate?

Before I take it, I will also book a course training on a 125cc geared bike, just so I can get used to the gears before taking the category A test. (I want to take the category A test when I am 17).

Also I know that I will need to restrict a bike to 33bhp for 2 years after I pass the test, is it possible to restrict a 650cc bike to 33bhp?

Thanks.

You can opt to go for either A1 or A2

You will need to practice on the type of bike you are going to try to pass on - usually by working with an instructor.

Theory test is seperate and you have to pass that before putting in for the Module 1 (off road) and Module 2(on road) test.

One commonly restricted bike and a good choice for a first bike is a Suzuki SV650. Twins are best and fours tend to be too heavy at 33bhp. An alternative is an unrestricted Honda or Kawasaki 250cc as both are under 33 bhp and faster than a heavier restricted 650cc

    Hi J,

I am a Driving Standards Agency (DSA) qualified motorcycle instructor. I teach the CBT. I train riders taking their motorcycle test. I am qualified by the DSA to teach people post test.

I am appalled by the misinformation that is given out in these answers.

Look at - http://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/law.htm#bike and scroll down to types of full licence.

You will see that they talk of an A and A1 licence.

The A1 licence can be obtained by talking your test on a motorcycle over 75cc up to 125cc. This will give you an A1 licence and that is all. It allows you to ride 125cc as a full licence holder( no L plates and can carry pillion passengers).

It does NOT change to allow you to ride any size bike after 2 years.

If you take your test on a 120 -125cc bike you get the A licence. This allows you to ride any size motorcycle restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. Thereafter any size bike.

Yes you can restrict a 650cc to 33bhp

Given that why does anyone want to take an A1 test when all training schools use 125cc that meet the test criteria?

The Theory is separate. You can do that now as the theory test lasts 2 years.

Your CBT certificate lasts for 2 years.

There is NOT a separate CBT to ride a 125 as some misinformed person keeps repeating on these questions despite repeatedly being told otherwise.

The CBT you took at 16 is all you need to move up to 125cc on your 17th birthday.

To take the practical test you must take your licence, CBT certificate and Theory test certificate with you.

The practical test is divided into 2 parts these days. On off road element where you have to perform proscribed exercises. These are described in the above link if you follow it through.

The on road test is about 35 minutes of on road riding where the examiner follows you.

You have to have all of the above documents plus a module 1 pass certificate when you attend the on road test.

    Hello

You are 16 so you have passed your Group P (Moped) CBT. Although you may have taken it on an Twist & Go (Automatic) bike it covers you for both.

Normally you would now have to pass your Motor Bike Based Theory test, Then the Driving test. to give you a Full Group P licence.

Do the Theory test it will cover you for all the Motor Bike Groups.

Do not bother with the Moped Driving test.

When you are 17 you have to do your Group A1 CBT then you take the Driving test on a geared Motor Bike as it does affect the Full licence you will get (Both or Automatic only).

2 years after you pass your A1 Driving test you will automatically get your Full Group A licence (Any cc no restrictions).

The other option is to pass your A1 Driving test which gives you the A1 Full licence, Then Go onto a Group A2 Motor Bike, As you say that is any cc but restricted to maximum of 33 BHP but you would be back onto a Provisional licence for them until you pass your A2 Driving test. The advantage is the not having to wait 2 years to get your Full Group A licence but you will have to pay for 2 Driving tests.

Any bike can be restricted to the 33 BHP but some are easier than others as you can buy kits to do so. The other way would be to go for a smaller bike that is in the A2 Croup to start with.

    Like a 250 cc.

    Hope this helps

yes it is and yes you can.

Also the module 1 test is only £15 and although you will fail it first time without experience, lessons cost about £60 for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Cheapest! so its cheaper to fail a few times than have a lesson but for module 2 id take a lesson beforehand.

Also you need to wear the correct clothing. They wont let you sit a practical without appropriate, footwear and clothing.

Im not sure but i think you may need your own bike of have to rent one capable of a certain speed.

Yes I'm afraid you do. Not only that but you need to do CBT too. Then your theory. Then your MOD1. Then your MOD2. I went through all my tests first time and it still took two months what with waiting for test dates etc. Good luck.

Getting 650 down to 33bhp is doubtful, you have the power to weight ratio too.
